Justin King Burns Up The Spring

We checked in last (Tuesday) night with the father and coach of Pa. cornerback/athlete Justin King, to find out about what's going on with King this spring. Track season is just about to start for Justin, and he's running some blazing times! And we wondered when he'd be zipping back to Ann Arbor.

Cornerback/athlete Justin King from Monroeville, Pa. (in the Pittsburgh suburbs) had phenominal PSU Nike stats last spring (2003): the 5-11, 180 pounder ran a 4.29 in the 40, a 3.72 sec. shuttle, and recorded a 37.1 inch vertical jump, and 11 bench press reps. And for his junior season King, considered the state of Pennsylvania's top junior, rushed as a junior for 1,763 yards (8.2 yards per carry) and 29 touchdowns; and as a cornerback he recorded 28 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. And he has a 3.0 GPA.

King attended the Feb. 29 U-M Junior Day. And last night we chatted with King's dad and head coach, Terry Smith -- about track, and about Justin's spring visit plans.

How is track going for Justin so far?

"They have not had their first meet yet, it's coming soon. But they just ran time trials today."

How'd Justin do?

"He ran a 10.42 second 100 meters."

Impressive! Have you and Justin made it to a Michigan Spring Practice yet?

"No, we haven't. We're trying to get up there though. The Michigan Spring Game is on the 10th, isn't it? We plan to make it up for that."

"But that's what the hold up is as far as going anywhere for spring practices -- Justin is running track. So we'll be at the Michigan Spring Game unless there is a track event that stops him."

Where else does Justin want to go in the spring, for spring practices or spring games?

"He's planning to get to Penn State and Ohio State, as well as Michigan of course."
