Andre Mathis Update

Yesterday Erie Cathedral Prep head coach Mike Mischler told GBW about star linebacker Andre Mathis. Today we get word from Andre himself about his recruitment. Is he camping at Michigan this summer?

Andre Mathis is quickly becoming one of the most highly sought after linebacker prospects in the Midwest. Erie Cathedral Prep head coach Mike Mischler informed GBW that over the past few months his star player has been offered by Syracuse, Penn State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and Boston College. The ball-hawking middle linebacker is garnering interest from even more schools than that and he has already determined a list of favorites. Fortunately for the schools on his list outside the Keystone State, Mathis indicated that he didn’t grow up with an allegiance to the in-state universities.

“Right now I like Michigan, Penn State, Miami, and Ohio State,” Said Mathis. I’ve only visited Pitt and West Virginia and I didn’t grow up a fan of any particular school.”

When asked to discuss how he plays on the field, the soft-spoken young man was rather modest in his description, hesitating to really compare himself to any star college or pro player. “I don’t think I really play like anyone,” Mathis said. “I think you could say that I’m real good in pursuit.” Coach Mischler was a little more willing to give the young man praise, saying, “he moves extremely well and has great lateral movement and very good speed for a big guy. He just covers ground really well. He’s been a great linebacker for us.”

Coach Mischler also indicated that three of the top schools on Andre’s list really want to see him in person before offering. Michigan is one of those teams. Coach Loeffler was no stranger to the Cathedral Prep campus during the periods that coaches were allowed to make high school visits and he expressed to Coach Mischler just how interested the Wolverines are. A planned return trip during the evaluation period only reinforces that. However, the Rambler head man said that he was told because of Michigan’s limited scholarships this season (as few as 15), the number of early offers wouldn’t be plentiful and that the staff was going to take their time with their evaluations. Andre told GBW that he has firm plans for only two camps at this point, but that there very well could be more. “I haven’t camped at any schools before,” said Mathis. “Right now I know going to the Nike camp at Penn State and I know I’m going to the Michigan camp too.”

How he does during those sessions will be of major importance because Andre indicated that he would like to have his decision made before his high school season starts. What will be the important factors in his choice? “I want to go some place where they’ll let me play middle linebacker and where I get along with the coaches,” said Mathis.

GBW will have more on Andre in the coming months.
