Is McKinney Still Committed to Michigan?

When tight end/defensive lineman James McKinney from Central High School in Lousiville, Ky. committed to U-M last season, there was concern as to whether or not the commitment would last until Signing Day 2005. GoBlueWolverine Magazine spoke with McKinney Wednesday evening to get the latest. Some big-time programs are putting on the pressure.

"Well, I'm just looking around, but I haven't talked to anybody," James McKinney said. "I guess you could say I've opened up my recruiting, but I'm still 100 percent for Michigan."

That may sound like something said by a polished politician rather than a 16 year old high school football player. McKinney did say his mother told him when he committed to the Wolverines that, "I shouldn't do it so soon." Well, it seems as though mom may have been right, since McKinney is getting attention from some major college football powers including Miami, USC, and Oklahoma. "I'd say Miami is putting on the most pressure, they offered me a little while ago and they are sending a lot of letters," McKinney said. "But I'm hearing a lot from USC and Oklahoma as well. Ohio State offered too a couple months ago." McKinney said the only campus he's visited is hometown Louisville. "I have no plans to go to any other schools (this spring)."

As far as possibly making it up to Ann Arbor this weekend, he said, "I thought about going up for the Michigan Spring Game but I don't think I will."

Linebacker prospect Brandon Logan, who has been offered by Michigan and recently visited Ann Arbor for a spring practice, is a friend of McKinney's. "He wanted me to go up to Michigan with him," James said. "But it was short notice and I couldn't make it."

Logan apparantly told McKinney he is close to committing. "He said he wanted to commit this spring," McKinney said. "But he isn't letting on to me what school he wants." Do McKinney and Logan want to attend school together? "Yes," McKinney said.

The 6-foot-4, 260 pound McKinney was planning on playing baseball this spring. But he said, "I decided to concentrate on football so I didn't play. I knew I was going to be going to some of the combines so I wouldn't have time." He said he is planning on going to the MSL/TheInsiders Camp in Cincinatti, but isn't sure if he'll go to any college summer camps.

Comment: Throughout our talk McKinney never sounded like he was 100% convinced he would stay with his Michigan commitment. Remember, Logan has mentioned that while Michigan is near the top of his list, he is also thinking of playing where it's warm all year.
