Nation's Top ILB To Visit Michigan

Michigan is recruiting some of the nation's top junior linebackers . But none is more highly touted than a young man from the Mid-Atlantic and who plans to visit Michigan -- not this weekend as he had planned, but this summer for sure and perhaps for camp.

Derek Nicholson from Winston Salem, N.C., Mt. Tabor is Max Emfinger's #1 Insider Linebacker. His stats are: 6-2, 230 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 340 lb. bench press, 32 inch vertical jump. As a junior he made 181 tackles, including 27 tackles-for-loss and 10 sacks. We spoke to the friendly and outgoing Nicholson Wed. evening.

Are you coming up to Ann Arbor this weekend?

"I was .... I was going to go up there for the Spring Game this weekend, but I've decided to wait and go up to Michigan in the summer, when I'll have more time to visit for a couple of days. "

"I've been traveling a lot the past few weekends -- to North Carolina and NC State, and I was at Florida State last weekend (his brother, A.J., plays there). And this weekend I've been invited to three spring games -- at Clemson, Florida and Michigan. I'd decided to go to the Michigan Spring Game. But Michigan is a drive from here, and it'd be such a quick trip. And so, my parents and I have been traveling so much that we've decided to take a break this weekend -- to not go anywhere."

"Michigan invited me to their Spring Game way back a couple months ago. I've called and talked to them, and they offered me a scholarship."

"I'll visit Michigan a couple of times. I'll go up there in the summer when there is more time, and I may go up a couple times this summer, if I go to the Michigan Summer Camp. I've been thinging about whether to go to camps, and if I do Michigan would be one I'd want to go to."

But, lest U-M fans think he is just focused on the Wolverines ... he also added:

"I want to see the most schools I can this summer."

Nicholson has a lot of offers already, including from Florida State, North Carolina, NC State, Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia, Notre Dame and Virginia -- as well as from Michigan of course. So we asked him:

What is the basis of your interest in Michigan?

"It's a top program, and they've told me they need linebackers, that linebacker is a key recruiting position for Michigan this year. So I've already been given a little taste for that position at Michigan."

And then he asked, "Is (Lamarr) Woodley playing linebacker? Is (Prescott) Burgess?"

We told him to get that information from the coaches ... but his familiarity with Michigan is interesting.
