The twists and turns in Malik Hairston’s recruitment continue to come at a dizzying pace. While the Wolverines are still in the fray for the Detroit born star, the staff isn’t putting all of their eggs in that basket. As I indicated on the Michigan Insiders Radio Hour this past weekend, another target has emerged. This prospect hails from assistant coach Charles Ramsey’s old stomping grounds on the West Coast. His name is Josh Akognon. The 5-11, 190-lb. cat-quick PG from Casa Grande High School in Petaluma California exploded during his senior season to average 30 points and 7 assists per game after never scoring 30 points in a single contest prior to this year. His largest scoring output came against league champs El Molino when he lit them up to the tune 54 points. He shot 53% from the field and an eye-popping 47% from behind the arc on the season.
We got word last week that Michigan was interested and it just so turns out that a member of the Wolverines’ staff just visited with him. I talked to Josh recently and the interest is definitely mutual.
How would you describe your game for those that haven’t seen you?
“I’d say I’m built well, strong, quick, smart, can penetrate, and shoot. You could compare me to Jameer Nelson.”
How did you do this past season?
“I averaged 30 points and 7 assists per game. I got All State, Division 2 Nor Cal player of the year, and I was nominated for the McDonald’s All American game.”
What schools have offered you?
Have you visited any of those schools?
“I’ve already visited USC.”
Do you have any others planned?
“Actually I’ll have one to Michigan soon.”
When will that be?
“I’m thinking this Sunday.”
Has Michigan been in Contact lately?
“Coach Ramsey came in to see me Friday. I had a long talk with him for about 30 minutes.I’m going to be calling him soon to speak with him again.”
Have any other coaches been in?
Do you have a top 5?
“Yeah, I’ve actually narrowed it down to a top 3.”
Who are they?
“Michigan, USC, and Kansas.”
Do you have a favorite?
“I like Coach Bibby at USC and I love Michigan because my favorite player is Jamal Crawford. Michigan and USC are tied right now.”
Will distance be a factor for you?
“No, I don’t think so.”
What are going to be the significant factors in your choice?
“The coaching staff and the players. If I make the trip to Michigan I’m really going to look at the players.”
GBW will continue to follow this recruitment closely.
