Going combine by combine ... the Top Michigan Recruit from each combine so far:
Miami Nike Camp:
(Interesting news from) Top Michigan Recruit: Cornerback Avery Atkins from Daytona Beach Mainland. Atkins had Nike stats of: 5-11, 182 lbs, a camp-best 3.90 sec. shuttle, and a 33.6 inch vertical (no 40 time has been posted for him, but he told us he ran a 4.39). His aunt/guardian just confirmed to us that Michigan visited his school last week (as part of the spring evaluation period) and followed up with a scholarship offer. When we'd talked to Avery about ten days ago he said that if Michigan offered him he'd definitely try to get up to the Michigan Camp this summer with his teammate LB Matt Lewis. At any rate, we expect him to make an official visit to U-M. Note: Atkins has been underrated -- altho his Nike performance could well fix that!
Ohio State Nike Camp:
Top Michigan Recruit: Antonio Bass. His Nike Stats: 6-1 3/4ths, 193 lbs, 4.41 sec. 40 (and, he tells us, he slipped!), 35 inch vertical, 19 bench press reps. He worked out as a quarterback and wide receiver, and as a wideout he was dominant. He of course has a U-M offer and plans to attend the U-M Camp.
Virginia Nike Camp:
Top Michigan Recruit: Derrick Williams. His Nike Stats: 5-11 1/2, 185 lbs., 4.3 in the 40, 32 inch vertical jump. Derrick has a long list of offers -- including U-M -- and still has a long list of schools ... but as his coach told us, he likes his U-M recruiter, Erick Campbell.
Houston MSL Combine:
(The thumbnail photo above is of) Top Michigan Recruit: Defensive tackle Vince Oghobasse from Alief Hastings, Tex. (Houston area). His combine stats: 6-5 1/2, 300 lbs., 5.2 in the 40. He also has a 3.6 GPA. The #2 prospect in TheInsiders "Texas Hot 100" has offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU and a bunch of other Big 12 schools ... but U-M has been on his 'long list', and he wants to be an engineer -- so if U-M offers him during this spring evaluation period things could get interesting.
And also, "Watch For":
"Watch for" from the Ohio State Nike Camp:
Watch for: Quarterback Rob Schoenhoft from Cincinnati, Ohio, St. Xavier. His Nike stats: 6-5 1/2, 225 lbs. He plans to camp for the 4th year in a row at U-M.
Watch for: Cornerback Brandon Harrison from Dayton Chaminade-Julienne. His Nike stats: 5-9, 190 lbs., a blazing 4.25 sec. 40 (that's not a typo -- that's what he told us), a 4.28 sec. shuttle, a 37 inch vertical jump, and an impressive-for-a-DB 18 bench press reps. of 185 lbs. Brandon and his teammate RB Javon Ringer will be U-M Campers this summer.
Watch for: Wide receiver Ryan Allison from Lake Orion, Mich. His Nike stats: 6-3, 199 lbs., two 40 heats of 4.31 and 4.28 secs., a 36.2 inch vertical jump. He will will be a U-M Camper this summer.
Watch for: Offensive tackle Zach Hennis from Plain City, Oh., Jonathan Alder. His Nike stats: 6-7 1/2, 295 lbs., 5.3 in the 40, 25 bench press reps. He will will be a U-M Camper this summer.
Watch for??? He's an OSU commitment, but he visited U-M last weekend and 'might' look around a bit (don't hold your breath ...) Offensive tackle Alex Boone from Lakewood St. Edward's . His Nike stats: 6-7 1/2, 294 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 24 bench press reps.
"Watch for" from the Virginia Nike Camp:
'Woulda been' a top Michigan Recruit performer (he had a hamstring injury and had to drop out of the combine): Cornerback/running back Victor Harris (6-0, 185 lbs., 4.45 in the 40, 2.8 GPA) from Highland Springs, Vir. Harris has been visited at his school during the spring evaluation period, he has a U-M offer, and he grew up a U-M fan. He is 'open' -- but we expect him to make an official visit to U-M.
Possibly watch for: Wide receiver Stephen Smalls from Lancaster, Penn., Conestoga Valley. His Nike stats: 6-0.5 169 lsb., 3.86 sec. shuttle, 42.8 inch vertical jump. Smalls' long list includes Michigan.
"Watch for" from the San Diego State Nike Camp/LA MSL Combine:
'Almost' in the "Top Recruit" catagory: Cornerback Kevin Thomas from Oxnard (in the Northern LA suburbs) Rio Mesa. His Nike stats: 6-0, 170 lbs., 4.4 sec. 40, a 4.03 sec. shuttle, 37 inch vertical jump, 16 bench press reps. He has offers from Washington State and Cal, but no colleges have been to his school during the evaluation period as yet .... that should change (as we said, his transfer from San Fernando Valley football powerhouse Ventura St. Bonaventure may have hurt his reputation a little, but after his Nike and MSL Combine performances, the effect could well be temporary).
Watch for: Jumbo Athlete Charles Brown from Pomona Diamond Bar. Nike stats: 6-6, 247 lbs., and ran a 5.0 40. Brown was number one at the SDST Nike as far as the 'look test' goes. He is a tight end, but with his Nike stats the D-line or even O-line may be his college future. He told us he has no offers as of yet, but that he likes USC and UCLA, plus BYU, Michigan, Oregon and Arizona.
Possibly watch for: Linebacker Prince Hall from Moreno Valley (on the way to Palm Springs from LA). Nike Stats: 5-11 1/2, 239 lbs., 4.7 sec. 40, 4.3 sec. shuttle. His dad told us that Prince does not want to play in the Pac 10, and that he has offers from Oklahoma and Alabama, and that he is also hearing a lot from Georgia (his current fav). But Hall has serious interest in Michigan as well.
