Deep South's Top CB Receives Michigan Visit

Living in a small town in the heart of the Deep South does slow down a prospect's recruitment. This particular player is considered the top cornerback in the Deep South but colleges are just slowly taking notice. So for him it's early -- and Michigan has jumped in.

Derek Pegues, from Batesville, Miss., South Panola is the guy we're talking about. Pegues is a high school quarterback (ala Antonio Bass and Steve Breaston). But at 5-11, 190 lbs., and with a 40 time of 4.4 secs., he is an 'Athlete' whose college future is on the defensive side of the ball. In fact, Peagues is a member of Tom Lemming's early Top 100 as a cornerback -- the only Deep South corner on Lemming's list.

Michigan is recruiting cornerbacks this year, so we chatted with Pegues last (Thurs.) night to see if U-M had found him.

Has a Michigan coach been in your school?

"Yeah, on Monday. It was the Michigan defensive backs coach, Coach English."

"He talked to my coach for a little while although my coach had to leave pretty quickly, for a funeral I think. But we had practice after school and so he (Coach English) got to watch that."

Note: Mississippi, like many Southern states, has spring football practice .... in Mississippi, spring practice is in full pads.

Did you get to talk to Coach English by phone?

"Yeah, we talked. He offered me a scholarship to Michigan."

Was that a surprise to you? Who else has offered you?

"Was it a surprise? Oh yeah it was a surprise! I was excited! So far I'd been offered by Mississippi and Mississippi State. "

Note: as we said, Pegues has played quarterback for his high school team. As a junior he passed for 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns; he also rushed for 1,500 yards and 31 touchdowns. So we asked him:

You've been playing quarterback in high school. Have you played any DB as well?

"Not so far. But I'll be playing both sides of the ball this year."

What position do you think you'll play in college?

"Cornerback. That's what colleges are recruiting me to play. And that's what I want to play, cornerback."

Who else has been recrutiing you?

"I've gotten mail from quite a few schools. But I like LSU and Tennessee, and the instate schools who've offered me."

And do you have an interest in Michigan?

"For sure! Michigan is right up there with those four schools. I'll take one of my official visits to Michigan."

Would you actually go North to college?

"Well, I'd kind've like to leave Mississippi to go to college."

Do you plan to attend any summer camps?

"Yes, I'm going to some summer camps. I've been planning to go to camps at Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Notre Dame. If Michigan sends me the information on their camp, I'll go to the Michigan Camp too. Notre Dame's is the 15th through the 19th of June. So probably I'll come up and do both the Notre Dame and Michigan camps on one trip."

What kind of player are you? What are your strong suits?

"My strengths are my speed, and my knowledge of the game. I've learned a lot about the game by playing quarterback. "

Pegues is also academically qualified, with a 2.8 GPA and an 18 ACT score.
