James McKinney Profile

TE/DE James McKinney (6-4, 280, 4.9) from Louisville, Ky, committed to Michigan last November but is now on the market again. But don't worry Michigan fans. There's still a very good chance McKinney will end up playing in Ann Arbor.

"I'm open now," said McKinney. "Since January, I haven't really been committed to Michigan. My mom told me not to rush it and to take my time since I only have this chance once in my life. She lives in Louisville and would like me to go to Kentucky. My dad is deceased."

James lives with an uncle, Neal McKinney, who also happens to be a chemistry teacher at Central High School, where James is enrolled. "My uncle used to live in Michigan but he has no preference about where I go really."

Although no longer committed to the Wolverines, James still favors them, at least slightly, over Notre Dame (DE), Miami (TE), USC (DL), Louisville (FB/TE) and Florida (DE). All have offered as well as Kentucky, Ohio St (DE), Texas A&M (TE), Arizona St, Tennessee (TE), Marshall and Clemson (4/29 offer).

"Michigan (TE) has a small lead. They were the first school to offer me in Sept '03. I like the atmosphere at the school and I have family living five mins from Ann Arbor. Another of my uncles (Gary Cooper) lives in Ann Arbor and he really wants me to go to Michigan. I'm familiar with all their coaches. Jim Herman is my favorite.

"I've already been to Notre Dame twice. I just went there last Sunday (4/25) and spoke with coach (Ty) Willingham. He's one of my favorites, a real players' coach. He's straight up and coached my cousin (Grant Mason) who played WR at Stanford before he transferred to Michigan where he'll be a JR DB.

"I haven't been to Calif yet but I'm going there when I go to the USC camp on 6/29. They have nice weather out there but I'm really not too big on the heat. I've talked with USC coach Ed Orgeron and he's real cool. He's coached guys like Warren Sapp. I also have cousins in Pasadena which is near USC I guess.

"At Miami, they have great TE tradition, with guys like Kellen Winslow, Bubba Franks and Jeremy Shockey. I also like coach Mario Cristobal. He writes me handwritten letters every week. He seems like a good guy and he also played at Miami.

"Louisville is my hometown. I might wait until the U.S. Army All-America game to announce any commitment, even though I could decide before then.

"I could play TE, FB or DE. I think I'm really better at DE because I have such good quickness and speed, but some schools want me more for TE.

"I also have great hands, good footwork and excellent strength. I don't care. I'll play wherever they want me to play. I could improve my all-around speed and my focus. I'm going to the Nike camp in Atlanta (Georgia Tech) on 5/8 and to the TI/MSL combine at Cincinnati on 5/29.
