Devin Brennan-McBride (6-9, 235, PF/C, Grade 10, London St. Thomas Aquinas) is one of the fastest rising prospects in all of Ontario. We witnessed Wolverine assistant Chuck Swenson watching the young man at the Charlie Weber Tournament a few weeks back and we watched him again ourselves at the Spiece Run N Slam All-Star classic. After one of his games we were able to chat with him a bit about his recruitment.
How did your season go this year?
“This year we went 37-0 and won our city championship. I did fairly well individually. I averaged about 20 points and about 15 rebounds.”
What are some of the schools that you’ve heard from so far?
When was the last time you heard from Michigan?
“We went on visit to Michigan on Friday. We stopped off with the team (on the way to Ft. Wayne) and I talked to Coach Chuck (Swenson).”
Devin prepares to power it up!
Will Michigan be on your short list?
Did you grow up a fan of any particular school?
“No but I was cheering for Duke this year.”
What are going to be the most significant factors in your choice?
“Probably my parents.”
Have you thought about when you might decide?
“I’ll probably wait until my senior year to decide.”
Toronto West Hill head Coach Wayne Dawkins phoned GBW recently to update us on Coach Amaker’s visit. Needless to say, after Jevohn’s open gym performance a few weeks ago, the attention being paid him has been growing at a steady pace.
How did last week’s visit go?
“It went really well. Tommy was very impressed and Jevohn already really liked him…even from a distance. He likes his style. His mom was there and they all got a chance to sit down and talk. She was impressed too.”
It really seems like the attention has been picking up since that Open Gym Session.
“It’s funny because in the first game he didn’t look like anything. So I called him over to the corner and I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ Then he went out and scored every basket in the next game for his team and they won! “
“Now he has been invited to the NBA Camp, the Nike Camp, and ABCD. He’s going to have to choose between Nike and ABCD, but he’ll be at the NBA Camp for sure.”
Jevohn drives on the defense
So have they talked to you about what the plan for Jevohn is?
“They came in early and have been very intriguing and that’s the final piece. The coaching is great and university is great. Now it’s just a matter of what their plan is and what their intentions for him are. But I know they want him.”
Any new schools jumping in?
“Illinois was in the gym with Tommy Amaker last week. I just got off the phone with Jay Price at Illinois. He was asking me if Jevohn could play the point because he handles the ball so well. Illinois came in and is trying to get in on the recruitment right away. I haven’t had a school come in here yet that hasn’t fallen in love with him.”
“Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan have all seen him and have all said, ‘we’ve got to get that kid.’ And I told you what happened with Pittsburgh already. They saw Jevohn when he had a bad ankle. Then they came back and saw him when he was healthy two weeks ago. Now they’re saying the same things as the other schools.”
Is there a player in college of the pro’s that you would compare Jevohn to?
“He’s one of those kids that we’re still trying to figure out how to get it out of him. He’s just not a kill and destroy type kid. But he’s very smooth and just gets it done. The coaches who were at that open run that day were comparing him to Ray Allen and Kobe Bryant. “
As always, we’ll have much more on Jevohn throughout the summer.
Finally GBW learned that Michigan was in Southern California on Friday to watch another 2006 PF. Harvard Westlake was the destination to see Alex Stepheson work out. The youngster who’s sister graduated from UM, has expressed a desire at this early point to stay close to home. Still, the Wolverines are making their presence felt. We’ll have much more from Alex shortly. (For those that missed the GBW report that broke the news of his interest, click here.)
