Atlanta Combine: James McKinney

GoBlueWolverine was at the Georgia Tech Nike Camp Saturday. We watched and chatted with several players -- mainly Louisville Kent. (Central) Jumbo Athlete James McKinney. James was Michigan's 2nd commitment late last fall, but has since backed off from that commitment. Where does Michigan stand for James? And what position is he likely to play in college?

(PHOTOS TO COME)

‘Jumbo athlete' James McKinney made unofficial visits to Michigan last fall for the Notre Dame and Ohio State games, and committed to the Wolverines shortly after the OSU game, becoming Michigan's 2nd commitment for the 04-05 recruiting class. At the OSU game he looked 6-2 and 250 or so pounds, and was being listed as a tight end.

At the U.S. Army Combine in early January he looked heftier -- measuring in with the following stats: 6-1 1/2, 274 lbs., 5.10 in the 40, 14 bench press reps., 24 1/2 inch vertical jump. GoBlueWolverine was at the combine and watched McKinney working out, and James also told us at the time that he would probably take some official visits.

Saturday at the Georgia Tech Nike Camp, McKinney was suffering from the effects of a little-toe injury -- 10 stitches worth on the crease of his pinky. He weighed about the same as a the U.S. Army Combine, 276 lbs., but he was not in as good of physical shape due to his recent inactivity with the injury. Still, he measured 6-3, 276 lbs., and ran a 5.0 in the 40 (he didn't run a shuttle due to the toe problem).

McKinney worked out a defensive lineman, where it looks like his college future lies. In the one-in-one DL vs. OL drills his ability was evident. With his toe and being a little out of shape, he wasn't able to go quite 100%, but no opponent could handle him.

After the combine was over we walked with James and chatted about his recruiting situation. Here is what he said to us.

"Michigan still leads, but I do want to take all my visits. I'd like to visit USC and Miami (though Miami Head Coach Coker was among the many college coaches at the combine, we never saw Coker say hi to or go near James), and Notre Dame ... the 5th visit is up for grabs."

"Coach Herrmann and Coach Carr are coming into my school next week."

"I will definitely camp at Michigan."

"I'd like to play where it gets colder rather than hotter."
