him. At close to 6-5 and 315 pounds, the Philly youngster was every bit as powerful as he looked (22 bench press reps of 185, which was an off day for him). What surprised onlookers and opponents alike was Marques’ superior quickness. His straight-line speed was good for a kid his size (5.06 in the forty), but his explosion off the ball was practically unparalleled. The only young man that was in his league was Randallstown, Maryland’s Melvin Alaeze (6-3, 277, 4.54 in the 40, 4.3 in the shuttle, 22 bench press reps). If Marques didn’t

blow by his opponents off of the snap, he bowled them over with his strength. After the camp was over we spoke with him about his performance and his recruitment. Though he has no favorite at this point, he has noticed the interest Michigan is showing and plans to make Ann Arbor one of his summer camp stops. When discussing what he is looking for in a school, our talk quickly shifted to off of the field considerations like academics. He admittedly “messed up” his first three years of high school, but the recruiting process and more maturity have helped him to understand that there is more to making it than what he can do on the field. It was apparent from our conversation that his priorities have been altered in that regard. We’ll have much more on our lengthy conversation with him later. Marques had a lot to say and we’ll have more from him later.

Justin King didn’t work out on the day do to a sore hamstring, but he was still one of the stars of the camp. Being held out of competitive drills was tough Justin. He was chomping at the bit to get on the field, mentioning ” I wish I could be out there today because I know I’d do well against the guys they have out there!” The only testing station he participated in was the bench press, where he threw up 185 pounds 15 times. On the recruiting front, Justin is still taking things very slowly. But based on a number conversations during the day, there isn’t any question that the Wolverines still sit in a very favorable spot. He is good friends with Steve Breaston (the two speak often) and he also knows Ryan Mundy, so the Western PA connection is there.

Salem New Jersey’s Lamont Robinson was one of the most put together prospects we’ve seen all summer. At 6-2 220 pounds, the young man was all muscle. He scratched his forty time, but on the field his speed definitely wasn’t an issue. He ran step for step with backs out of the backfield, and if he got his hands on them they were overmatched by his power. He showed good technique in the one-on-one drills and was at ease in coverage. He reminded me of a bigger Lawrence Reid (though Lamont looked to be a step or two faster). As

impressive as Lamont was, he was NOT the only Wolverine linebacker target that showed well. Andre Mathis had a really good afternoon. He looked like a prototype middle linebacker at 6-2, 230 lbs. He ran a 4.69 forty, but his shuttle time was a blazing 4.19 seconds. The Erie Cathedral Prep (Erie, PA) star reacted extremely well to the ball and looked more comfortable in coverage as the day went on. He did an excellent job of applying the instruction he received from the Nike instructors to his play on the field. It was most evident during the passing drills when by the end of the day he was playing textbook trail technique on the backs coming out of the backfield. Michigan is still out in front for him and he will be at the camp next month in Ann Arbor (as will Lamont).

Also in attendance were two recruits that had early Michigan interest only to see it dim lately. They were Walker Ashley (from Eden Prairie, Minnesota) and Mikell Simpson (from Harrisburg Pennsylvania). Ashley (6-4, 275 lbs. 4.9 in the 40, 4.9 sec. shuttle, 24.5 inch vertical) currently touts offers Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon and Minnesota. He also mentioned that a Michigan coach came by his school. However, it appears that the Wolverines trail in this race. On the day Ashley looked to be one of the most athletic big men in attendance.

But while his agility was very very good, he wasn’t nearly as dominant as Slocum or Alaeze. Still, his raw potential was evident. He may camp in Ann Arbor if Michigan shows more interest. Simpson (6-2, 200 lbs., 4.38 in the 40, 4.0-sec. shuttle, 30 inch vertical, 19 reps of 185) was certainly amongst the top performers at running back. His ability to catch the ball out of the backfield was hard for other backs to duplicate. After watching him breeze through the drills it was easy to see why his scholarship list continues to expand. Mikell’s now holds offers from Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Syracuse, Wisconsin, UCLA, Virginia, Nebraska, and Notre Dame. Where Michigan places in his recruitment may well depend on what position they recruit him at. He has expressed a very firm desire to line up in the offensive backfield at the next level.

As has seemingly the case every year at the Nike Camp in Happy Valley, some of the most impressive players in attendance were juniors-to-be. Harrisburg Pennsylvania’s (Bishop McDevitt High) LeSean McCoy and Princeton New Jersey’s (The Hun School…Jeff Zuttah’s alma mater) Myron Rolle turned heads all day long. Rolle was 6-2, 205 and was being discussed as maybe the top DB in attendance. His combination of size and range had college coaches drooling. The attention given McCoy’s performances was just as intensive. The crowd of college coaches watching McCoy go through drills was steady all afternoon. The 5-11 193-lbs. jitterbug started out the day by burning up the 40-yard dash with times of 4.25 and 4.37. He followed that up by running a 4.1 shuttle time, 15 bench reps of 185 lbs., and turning in a 35-inch vertical jump. LaSean mentioned that this very early point in his process that he is open to just about any school. However, the three schools that he mentioned by name were Miami, Michigan, and Penn State. Both will be prospects to be on the lookout for next year.

After wrapping up the PSU camp, we jetted over to Iowa City to take in the Nike Camp at the University of Iowa. Tom Lemming had his picture day at Wrigley field (for the report, click here), so many of the top Illinois kids weren’t in attendance. Still, the trip to Hayden Fry’s old stomping grounds wasn’t in vein because there were a couple prospects on Michigan’s radar in attendance putting their talents on display.

La Porte City Iowa’s Matt Pipho had a Michigan coach in his school earlier this year and has interest in the Wolverines. After attending Iowa’s junior day on Saturday, he returned to the practice facility the next day to workout at the Nike camp. With testing numbers of 6-6, 270 lbs., 5.19 sec in the forty, 4.66 sec in the shuttle, 26 bench press reps, and a 31 inch vertical…we noticed very quickly why he is considered one of the top

players in Iowa. In drills his agility was very apparent and in one-on-ones he stoned all his opponents at the line when they tried to bull-rush him. But, when they used the speed rush around the corner he had trouble keeping them out of the backfield. That said, his technique will surely improve and the upside on this young man is tremendous. He has the frame to carry 30-40 more pounds without losing any of his athleticism. Furthermore he’s extremely coachable and was one of the brightest kids there. Pipho mentioned that he grew up an Iowa fan but that they’re not his favorite at this point. He also mentioned that a trip to Ann Arbor for Michigan’s summer camp is very possible. If he does make it in, look for him to check out the medical school since he hopes to be a pre-med. undergrad.

Aside from Pipho, the one prospect we paid the most attention to was Marshall Michigan’s Evan Sharpley. The young QB was very impressive on the day and was asked to stay after the Nike Camp for the Elite 11 tryouts. We’ll have even more on Sharpley later.
