Thomas Will Take Time to Decide

Friday morning GoBlueWolverine Magazine spoke with the Athletic Director at Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, Calif. regarding defensive back Kevin Thomas. Friday evening GBW spoke with Thomas himself and he confirmed his impressive list of offers so far.

"I now have offers from USC, Michigan, Washington, Washington State, Fresno State, Arizona, San Jose State, Cal, and Oregon State," Kevin Thomas said. "Coach Carroll called me Tuesday night and said I have a full ride waiting for me at USC. Coach English told my coach on Wednesday that Michigan would be sending me a letter offering me a full ride right away."

Thomas is excited about all the activity, and a bit surprised. "I didn't expect this all to happen so fast," he said. "I just wanted to go to the camps and do the best I could and show the schools I could play. Things look like they are working out ok." Thomas excelled at the Long Beach MSL/TheInsiders Combine in March, the San Diego Nike Camp in April, and the Ventura County Coaches Combine this past weekend.

The 6 foot 0, 170 pound Thomas hinted earlier that a USC offer would seal things for him and that he would probably commit on the spot. All the attention from other top programs has caused him to step back a bit. "I think I'm going to go through the whole process now and decide in February," he said. "I want to take all of my visits to my top schools which are USC, Michigan, Cal, and Arizona. My fifth visit will probably be to Washington State, I have a friend that plays there, Charles Dillon."

There is also another person close to Thomas that may have an influence on his decision. "My brother, Andres, was just offered by San Jose State and Oregon State," Thomas said. "We've talked about going to the same school together and it would be nice, but it isn't certain, we can play alone on different teams and be ok." Big brother Andres plays cornerback for Santa Barbara Community College and stands 6 foot 0 and weighs 180 pounds.

Thomas said that right now he is most comfortable with the USC staff because he has spent the most time with them and is familiar with the campus, plus, "They seem to have the best opportunity for playing time." His childhood favorite, Michigan, "Always puts guys in the NFL and they always have great DB's," he said. He likes Cal because of their academic reputation and the fact that they are in California. Arizona is high on the list because, "They just hired Coach Stoops and they are an up and coming program," he said. "I'd like to be a part of rebuilding a program."

Thomas will not be attending Saturday's Nike Camp at Stanford because he will be competing in the CIF Sectional Finals for track, where he runs in the 200 meters and in the anchor on the 4X100 relay team. Thomas has run a 22 second flat in the 200 and his relay team has a best of 42.9 seconds. He will begin participating in spring practice next week. He said he will be at Cal's June 5 camp, as well as the Senior Camp at USC June 28-29. He is also considering the June 6th UCLA camp and taking a trip to the Arizona camp. UCLA has just recently showed interest in Thomas.
