"Johnny told USC that he's going to Michigan!"

We chatted this morning with the defensive backs coach of Michigan's newest football commitment, Johnny Sears from Edison High in Fresno, California. Heeere's Johnny!

Fresno Edison Assistant Coach Tony Perry:

"Yes, Johnny Sears has committed to Michigan. (Michigan Assistant Coach) Ron English was here in the spring and watched us practice, and he offered Johnny at that time, when he called him that night. Since then Johnny has been thinking about it -- he also has offers from Cal and Washington State -- and this week, it was Wednesday or Thursday, Johnny called Coach Carr and said to him that if the offer was valid that he wanted to accept it! Coach Carr told him, 'Welcome to Michigan!"

"Boy, a USC coach got in here the next day and offered Johnny fast! The head coach here at Edison, Tim McDonald, a long-time SS for the 49er's who was all-pro for 7 years in a row, has some USC connections. But Johnny told USC that he was sticking with his commitment -- and that he is going to Michigan!"

"Johnny was at the USC's one-day elite camp a few weeks back and really turned heads -- he measured 6-1 1/2, 175 lbs. and ran an electronically timed 4.4 sec. 40 and had a 34 inch vertical jump. And he covered really-really well in the WR-DB drills."

"I've been the DB coach here at Edison for 16 years and I've known Ron English for a long time. I just had a back who went to Fresno State go into the CFL this year. And I also coached Ricky Manning (a former U-M Camper for those tho remember), who also was interested in Michigan a few years back but his parents wanted him to stay close to home. This year at Edison we have two quality cornerbacks, Johnny and Robert Peal, and a quality quarterback, Arkelon Hall. Robert and Arkelon went to the Stanford Nike Camp a week ago, as you know, you met them and all -- but Johnny came down sick and didn't go. It's too bad -- Robert was considered the second best defensive back there (his Nike stats: 5-11, 180 lbs, 4.56 sec. 40, 4.31 sec. shuttle), and Johnny would have done ... at least as well or better. But it was probably better for Michigan that Johnny didn't go! Coaches would have been all over him!"

"Arkelon (Hall) was also interested in Michigan, as you know, but he's committed to Washington State. And Robert Peal has five offers now, but when he heard that Johnny had committed to Michigan, he said maybe he'd go there too if he got an offer!"

We asked Coach Perry to talk about Johnny as a player and an athlete.

"Johnny is a great athlete -- he's tall and wiry, he's fast, and he really can cover. He runs track as well -- he runs the 110 and 300 meter high hurdles. This is his first year running them, and he has times of 14.8 sec. in the 110 and 40.5 in the 300! And he's a good basketball player -- he goes in and dunks on people!"

The $64 Dollar Question: will Johnny stick with U-M, with USC wanting him?

"Well, for one thing, Johnny has family in Detroit. And he isn't really from the West Coast. He and his dad and uncle move around a lot -- his uncle is a drag racer and his dad works on the vehicle, a motorcycle. His uncle gets that thing up to 190 mph they tell me! So they move around following the racing circuit."

"Will Johnny stick with Michigan -- definitely."
