Memorial Day Best Guess Rec. Class List: LBs & DBs

Here is our Memorial Day "Best Guess Recruiting Class" list -- Linebackers and Defensive Backs.

The premise: if Signing Day were Sept. 1st, who would be at the top of the list?

The questions: with Rico McCoy now having a U-M offer, are there enough LB's on the list? And with Johnny Sears' commitment, how many more CB's will U-M go after?

With Michigan looking at a smallish 2004/05 recruiting class (our unofficial count right now is up one, to 15, so it may grow to 16-17 tops) and now having FIVE commitments, they are more than likely only looking for 10-12 more recruits, perhaps broken down as follows: 1 QB, 0 RB's (with 1 commitment already), 0 WR's (with 2 commitments already), 2 OT's (with 1 OL commitment already, an OG), 3 DL's (1-2 DT's and 1-2 DE's), 3 LB's (1 ILB's, 2 OLB's), 3 DB's (3 corners), and a Punter.

LINEBACKERS

The Linebackers Need: This is likely a positon of emphasis for the 04/05 recruiting class: three may be in order. So Michigan may take 3 (or even 4?) recruits from this Linebackers list. The question: with Rico McCoy having an offer now, are there now enough LB recruits -- particularly OLB's which may be the bigger need ... if there are not enough OLB recruits, look for a couple more name to be added to his list as time goes on.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

The Defensive Back Need: with Marlin Jackson and Markus Curry both going into their final seasons for the Wolverines, cornerback is quite likely a position of recruiting-emphasis. So Michigan may take 3 (or even 4?) recruits from this DB list. And if U-M takes three DB's in this class, they just might all be corners. So Johnny Sears is just a good start!

-- U-M Commitment #5: Cornerback Johnny Sears (USC camp stats: 6-1 1/2, 175 lbs., 4.4 in the 40 {electronic}, 34 inch vertical jump) from Fresno, Calif., Edison. Johnny is an unknown because he had to sit out his junior season after transferring ... he also had an emergency appendectomy the day of the Stanford Nike Camp. Still, the Edison DB coach, who has sent many kids to Div. 1 college programs (including Ricky Manning), highly recommends him.

-- The most likely recruits?

- Cornerback Justin King (Planned '04 U-M Camper, 5-11, 182 lbs., '03 PSU Nike stats: 4.29 in the 40, 3.72 sec. shuttle {best of camp}, 37.1 inch vertical jump {best of camp}, 15 bench press reps. {'04 Nike}, 3.0 GPA) from Monroeville, Pa. Considered perhaps the #1 junior prospect in Pennsylvania, he rushed as a junior for 1,763 yards (8.2 yards per carry) and 29 touchdowns; and as a cornerback he recorded 28 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. He has a U-M OFFER and came to the Feb. 29 Junior Day and the Spring Game, and he also plans to attend the Michigan Summer Camp. He is a Tom Lemming Top 100 prospect. At the PSU Nike Camp he again stated that U-M is his leader -- but PSU is a strong contender for him, as are USC (camp) and Tex.
GBW Interviews King in mid-May at PSU Nike.

- Cornerback Derek Pegues (Probable '04 U-M Camper, 5-11, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 335 lb. bench press, 2.8 GPA/18 ACT) from Batesville, Miss., South Panola. He has a U-M OFFER, and lists U-M and Tennessee (offer, camp) as his top 2. He has family in Sought Bend and plans to attend the Notre Dame and U-M Camps. As a junior QB he passed for 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns; he also rushed for 1,500 yards and 31 touchdowns. He is a member of Tom Lemming's early Top 100 as a cornerback -- the only Deep South corner on Lemming's list.
GBW Interviews Pegues in mid-May.

- Athlete (QB/RB/WR) Antonio Bass (Planned '04 U-M Camper, OSU Nike stats: 6-1 3/4, 193 lbs., 4.41 in the 40, 35 inch vertical jump, 19 bench press reps. ... 3.0 GPA/21 ACT) from Jackson, Mich. Bass is more likely a wideout recruit, but we list him here as well since he'd make a great DB. He has a U-M OFFER and attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day, a U-M spring practice, and the Michigan Spring Game as well. He is one of the consensus top three instate juniors, and could play quarterback, wideout, running back or cornerback. Michigan leads for him, but schools like Virginia Tech and Syracuse are a threat. He is a Tom Lemming Top 100 prospect.
GBW Interviews Bass in late-April.

-- All-Star Longer Shots?

- Cornerback Avery Atkins (Probable/possible '04 U-M Camper,Miami combine stats: 5-11, 182 lbs., 3.9 sec. shuttle, 33.6 inch vertical jump, 12 bench press reps. ... 4.39 in the 40 {2003 FSU Camp}, 3.0 GPA) from Daytona Beach, Fla., Mainland. As a junior he made 39 tackles, six pass breakups and three interceptions. As of late May LSU leads. He is Max Emfinger's #6 cornerback.
GBW Interviews Atkins in late-April.

- Cornerback Bryan Evans (Planned '04 U-M Camp visitor, 5-11, 176 lbs., 4.3 in the 40) from Jacksonville, Fla., White. He is TheInsiders' #10 South prospect, and the top CB (and 2nd DB, after Avery Atkins who is listed as a safety). Offers from FSU, Florida, LSU, Tennessee and others.

As a junior Harris rushed for 2,210 yards and 37 touchdowns as a running back; as a cornerback on defense he made 45 tackles and eight interceptions. He was named a first-team Class 3A selection as both a defensive back and a tailback while helping lead the his team to a 9-2 record. He is a Tom Lemming Top 100 prospect.

- Safety/linebacker Nick Harris (LSU Nike stats: 6-2 1/2, 209 lbs., 35 inch vertial jump, 4.2 sec. shuttle, 12 bench press reps.) from Alexandria, Louisiana. He has a U-M OFFER, and U-M is in his top 3 (but perhaps 3rd) with LSU (camp, no offer) and Texas A&M (camp, offer). Harris was considered one of the top 7 performers in a strong LSU Nike camp.
GBW Interviews Harris in mid-May.

-- Keep your eye on:

- Athlete/safety Jermaine Jenkins (Planned '04 U-M Camper, OSU Nike stats: 6-1, 185 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 4.2 sec. shuttle, 14 bench press reps.) from Saginaw, Mich. He plays quarterback for Saginaw but will likely play safety in college. He attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day.
GBW Interviews Jenkins in mid-May.

He attended the Feb. 29 Junior Day. OSU and U-M may be his favorites -- we'll see who offers him first.
GBW Interviews Harrison in late-April.

- Cornerback Kevin Thomas (SDST Nike stats: 6-0 1/2, 166 lbs., 4.49 in the 40, 4.03 sec. shuttle, 37.2 vertical jump, 17 bench press reps.) from Oxnard, Calif., Rio Mesa. He was the top "athlete' at the SOCAL MSL/TheInsiders Combine in March (he ran the 2nd fastest 40 overall, on an extremely slow long-grass track it was a 4.64). He was also one of the top five performers at the SDST Nike Camp. Originally from St. Louis, he grew up a U-M fan, and the Wolverines are interested -- but USC may lead.
GBW Interviews Thomas in late May.
