2004 Commitment(s)

Ronald Coleman SF
Ht: 6-6 Wt: 210 PPG: 18
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Romulus Senior HS (Romulus, MI)
Ron was Michigan's first commit for the 2004 class. RC has one of the best strokes in the entire midwest region. I witnessed him drain 10 straight threes in warm-ups at the Nike MDC. He's improving his off of the dribble game and will be a force in the Big Ten for years to come. GBW will have more on RC very shortly.

Mystery Player
As we alluded to over the past few weeks on the radio show and on the premium message board, Josh Akognon (whom Michigan backed off of weeks before he later committed to Washington State) was not the only late season target. We are hearing that there may be yet another direction they can go in to fill a slot in the 2004 class. We are not at liberty to note whom this prospect might be, (as we don’t want to affect the process). If something comes of this and we receive info that we can pass on, we will be sure to do so. Stay tuned.

No new news on this front as of 6/9/04

2005 Commitment(s)

Jerret Smith PG
Ht: 6-3 Wt: 195
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Romulus HS (Romulus, MI)
I always come away impressed by what a floor general Smith is. Jerret is the quintessential pass first shoot second point guard and is not a player that observers would ever classify as selfish. Visited Michigan again on May 29, 2003 and committed on June 4. Jerret is an excellent passer that sees the court really well. The young floor leader is a perfect complement to the wing talent Michigan has brought in already, and will be bringing in over the next few years. Someobservers were down on him after Roumulus' playoff loss to Belleville and his subsequent early summer struggles in AAU. That said, he contines to impress when visiting Ann Arbor for open gyms and is a kid the current crop of players love to play with. Does have to work to gain consistency on his shot, improve his defense, and regain his confidence. The summer tournaments will provide him the opportunity to do those things.

Chris Douglas-Roberts PG/SG
Ht: 6-5 Wt: 165
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Renaissance HS (Detroit, MI)
Some consider Chris Douglas-Roberts the top prospect in the state of Michigan for the 2005 class. The Cass Tech swingman has an outstanding handle for his size and has demonstrated ability to run the point. He’s also very crafty in getting his shot off when he gets into the lane. His shooting ability is underrated, but it still needs improvement, as does his strength. Has been compared to Jamal Crawford by many pundits, including Prep Spotlight’s Vince Baldwin. Kansas, which once figure very prominently in his recruitment, has fallen down Douglas-Roberts' list with the commitment of PG Mario Chalmers. His list of schools is still vast, with Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, Oregon, and Cincinnati amongst those still fighting. Has a summer goal of being ranked a consensus top 10 player and probably won't decide until the late signing period.

Brandon Costner PF
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 210
AAU Team: Playaz Basketball Club
High School: Seton Hall Prep HS (West Orange, NJ)
Good inside-out game with the body to guard bigger players and the quickness to guard smaller ones. Nice stroke for his size. Ranked number #21 nationally by the insiders. The Wolverines are showing serious interest. Coach Tommy Amaker made a trip to New Jersey the week of February 2nd to see Costner in action. Michigan made the his trimmed down list. The nine schools in question were: N.C. State, UCLA, Seton Hall, UConn, Virginia, Michigan, Kansas, St. Joe's and Indiana. Has officially visited UCLA (where he had breakfast with legendary Coach John Wooden) and unofficially visited N.C. State, UConn, St. Joes's, and Seton Hall.

Eric Boateng C
Ht: 6-10 Wt: 220
AAU Team: Delaware Sharpshooters
High School: St Andrews School (Middletown, DE)
Ranked a 5 star player and the #1 center in the 2005 class by TheInsidersHoops.com. He broke his foot in the first game of the year, but schools have still been hot and heavy after this England transplant. Assistant Coach Chuck Swenson visited Boatneg in mid January and were again in during the first few days of the evaluation period. Eric made his way to Ann Arbor in March on an unofficial visit and reportedly enjoyed the trip. Tripped to UCLA soon after. There have also been strong rumors that Boston College would become a player. Against those adversaries the Wolverines stood an excellent shot at landing this premiere big man. While their shot is still good, now that the Duke Blue-Devils have jumped into the fray and made him their #1 post target, the odds just got a little longer. For now Boateng isn't commenting much on his recruitment and is saying that he is wide open.

Jevohn Shepherd SG
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 190
AAU Team: Phase 1
High School: West Hill Collegiate HS(Toronto, ONT)
GBW broke the news in early February of UM interest in this little known Canadian wing. He has been called a 6-4 Brent Petway by some who have seen him, but can also put it on the floor. His skills have caught Michigan's attention and assistant Coach Charles Ramsey has already made a few trips across the border to check him out. An April open gym session wowed coaches in attendance (and Coach Ramsey was once again there). Coach Amaker soon followed up with a visit of his own, and the Wolverines are the prohibitive favorite for this monster sleeper.

Ryan Wright PF

Wright is tremendous athlete from north of the border. According to West Hill Collegiate head coach Wayne Dawkins (Jevohn Shepherd's coach), Ryan also had an impressive showing at the open gym that Shepherd exploded at. Visited Michigan in early June and really enjoyed his time in Ann Arbor. Traveled to Michigan State afterward and both schools subsequently moved into his top 3. The Wolverines haven't extended an offer yet but he could emerge as a top target before all is said and done.

Eric Devendorf SG
Ht: 6-3 Wt: 185
AAU Team: Michigan Hurricanes
High School: Bay City Central HS(Bay City, Mi)
Eric de-committed from Michigan State earlier in the year after making what he called a hasty decision. Subsequent he has drawn interest from schools such as Michigan and Florida. On the court he has been having a phenomenal year.During one of his high school games he notched over fifty points, and he's continued his offensive prowess on the summer circuit. His deadly marksmanship and quick release have Prep Spotlight's Vince Baldwin contemplating moving him in rank to #1 for the in-state class of 2005. Will transfer to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

Anthony Sparks C/PF
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 315 PPG: 10.0
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Renaissance HS (Detroit, MI)
At 6-8 and over 300 lbs., this big man eats up A LOT of space in the paint. Hailing from the same school as former Michigan star, Robert Traylor,… the comparisons between the two have been frequent. However, Sparks has a little more finesse in his game and is not the athlete the Tractor was. He plays mostly below the rim and has a few nice post moves and he can also hit the 15-footer. If he can keep his weight under control, he can have a special season. (Word has it that he has done just that).

2006 Recruits

Brandan Wright PF/SF
Ht: 6-9 Wt: 200
AAU Team: Tennessee Travelers
High School: Brentwood Academy HS (Brentwood, TN)
Vince Baldwin of Prep Spotlight rates Brandon the top player at his position in the 2006 class. One of only a few sophomores to be invited to the Nike All-American camp. Very good size with outside range and the ability to guard anyone on the court. Has already visited Michigan unofficially. Doesn't list Michigan in his current top 5, but with his family ties in the Ann Arbor area the Wolverines shouldn't be counted out just yet. Immediate jump (to the NBA) candidate.

Derrick Caracter C
Ht: 6-9 Wt: 285
AAU Team: Riverside Church
High School: Fanwood (Scotch Plains, NJ)

Rated a 5 star player and the #1 center in the 06 class by theinsidershoops.com. Some have questioned his desire at times, but his talent is undeniable. Another of 3 sophomores invited to the Nike All-American Camp last year. Good face up range and can definitely bang down low. Some have mentioned him as an immediate jump (to the NBA) candidate, but seems focused on attending college at this point. The topic will surely be revisited his senior year. For the time being he has indicated that his recruitment is open but listed four schools by name. They were Duke, Miami, Stanford, and Michigan.

Kevin Durant PF/SF
Ht: 6-8 Wt: 185
AAU Team: DC Blue Devils
High School: National Christian Academy (Fort Washington, MD)

Long post player with inside/outside skills. Michigan has already ventured down to Maryland to see him in action. Ranked a 5 star prospect by TheInsidersHoops.com. Compared by some scouts to Demarr Johnson, Durant's early list consists of Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Maryland.

Ramar Smith SG
Ht: 6-2 Wt: 200
AAU Team: The Family
High School: Martin Luther King HS (Detroit, MI)
This young man has the complete package. Powerful guard that can hit big shots, drive, and finish with authority. However, he must improve his jumper and ball-handling skills in order to live up to the press-clippings. Considered not only the consensus #1 player in the state by most, but also the #1 player at his position nationally. Another important question surrounding his recruitment is, will he qualify? Informed me in early June that he hasn't heard much from Michigan and really likes Cincinnati.

D.J. Augustine PG
Ht: 5-11 Wt: 180
AAU Team: New Orleans Jazz
High School: Brother Martin HS (New Orleans, La)
D.J. has already caught the attention of several top programs including Michigan. Charles Ramsey has been to watch him in New Orleans and the Wolverines are under consideration. High school teammate of current UM football player Adam Kraus. He is rated a 5 star player and the #1 PG in the 2006 class by theinsidershoops.com. Named to the Adidas ABCD camp after his freshman year and is having a very good summer with the New Orleans Jazz. Led his team to the final game in the Bob Gibbons tournament of champions and was a missed 3-pointer away from knocking out a loaded Spiece Indy Heat team for the title.

David Lighty SG
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 185
AAU Team: Ohio Titans
High School: Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland OH)
Smooth wing guard with both perimeter and to-the-basket skills. An outstanding athlete that is ranked in the top 2 in his Ohio class IN FOOTBALL! Unfortunately for those fans of the gridiron, GBW has heard from good sources that Lighty plans to give up the pigskin this season to concentrate solely on basketball. He will undoubtedly be in the running for the state's top hoopster and may have to fight off another Michigan target, Daequan Cook, to claim that title. By the way, most consider him a HUGE Michigan fan.

Daequan Cook SG
Ht: 6-5 Wt: 190
AAU Team: Dayton Airmen / Spiece Indy Heat
High School: Dayton Dunbar (Dayton, OH)
Cook is one of the summer's top performers thus far. After leading his high school team to the state semis, he has teamed with Mike Conley and Greg Oden on Spiece Indy Heat to form one of the power teams on the summer circuit. Despite teaming with the two stars (whom already have chemistry because they play on the same high school squad), Daequan hasn't had any trouble turning heads in his direction. Great form on his jump shot and can put the ball on the floor better that one expects for such a long player. Though not an explosive leaper, he can get to the basket and finish despite contact. Some question his jumper, but his form is excellent and he is capable of going on long hot streaks from behind the arc. Though he hasn't stated a favorite, Michigan has been the first team mentioned whenever he has been asked for a list of schools this summer. Rated a 4 star player by the InsidersHoops.com at this point, but may achieve 5 star status before it is all said and done.

Matt is very skilled offensively and is considered one of the to shooting big men in his class. He has expressed a desire to get off of the West Coast, and Michigan has definitely made their interest knows. Coach Charles Ramsey has been in his school and the amount of attention being paid him by the Wolverines isn't lost on Matt. The Wolverines are amongst the early favorites.

AAU Team: Michigan Mustangs
High School: South Christian HS (Grand Rapids, Mi)
David isn't flashy, but he can shoot, is tough, strong, and can defend. He is one of those gritty players that does whatever it takes to help a team win, but doesn't get the credit he deserves at the end of the night. Kool is a physical guard that uses his build to his advantage both offensively (getting into the lane and drawing contact) and defensively (bodying up his opponent). Those that favor style over substance won't like Kool's game, but those that know what it takes to build a winning team will want him on their squad.

Tory Jackson PG
Ht: 5-11 Wt: 180

High School: Saginaw Buena Vista (Saginaw, MI)
Tory Jackson was on fire at the Spiece Run N Slam tournament. The Saginaw product is a clutch player will shooting range that extends beyond the three point line. He can get his shot off of the dribble and has the ball on a string. Probably more of a scorer than passer at this point, but he has the raw skill set to be very effective at the next level. Led Saginaw BV to Class C state title this year and is doing big things with the 17-and-under Michigan Mustangs squad this summer. There will be an on-going debate as to who the top PG in Michigan's class of 2006, Jackson...or Detroit Renaissance's TaJuan Porter. He grew up a Michigan fan, but look for interest in him from all over the country to really pick up before the summer is over.

From theinsiders.com: "A gifted young post, Stepheson has a chance to be among the top power forwards in his class. Deshawn is a face-up post player with range out to 18 feet. He can take big men off of the dribble, but must work to improve his game with his back to the basket. As he displays a willingness to bang around more down low, the attention that he receives will increase. It seems as if that message has been passed along, as he has really shown improvement in that area this summer. His AAU performances thus far have garnered much praise and he is one of the hotter prospects on the circuit. Another jet quick PG on Michigan's 2006 checklist. He started the summer with outstanding performances at both the Boo Williams and Charlie Weber tournaments. Some doubt TaJuan's college potetntial because of his height, but this dynamic player performs much taller than he actually is. An explosive scorer, he presents a change of pace option on both his high school and summer league teams. He is one of the fastest players in the country with the ball in his hands and does a good job of not getting his shot blocked when he takes it to the hole. Few know how well he gets off the floor, but the young man has dunked the basketball! To top it off, he is deadly from the outside. Michigan assistant Charles Ramsey recruited former EMU Eagle and current Denver Nugget Earl Boykins, so Michigan won't overlook TaJuan if he can play. And this young man CAN play.
