Camping? Fla. CB Avery Atkins

The injury bugaboo seems to be hitting prospective U-M Campers right and left. Has CB Avery Atkins escaped ... and is he camping? GoBlueWolverine spoke to him Sunday.

GBW spoke Sunday morning to the mother of cornerback Avery Atkins from Daytona Beach, Fla., Mainland. We asked her about Avery's U-M camp plans.

"He has not told me if he's going. He can go if he wants to, I'll get him a ticket, but he has to tell me what his final decision is. You should talk to Avery himself about it, he'll fill you in."

So Sunday evening we tracked down Avery. He told us what's going on.

"I am coming up to the Michigan Camp. I'll talk to my coach tomorrow (Monday) to get the details about what days, etc. But I'm not going to be able to participate. I pulled my hamstring during our spring practice, and I'm still recovering from that."

As far as what happened to his leg:

"I was just running full speed when I stepped in a hole or something and it just gave out."

So would he really come up from Florida to the U-M camp if he can't work out?

"I'll still be able to meet and talk with coaches and players, to get to know them, and to see the facilities school. I've never been up there before, so I'm looking forward to that."

Atkins is the top defensive back in TheInsiders' South Hot 100, and the #7 prospect overall (see our left sidebar for a link). His stats:

Miami Nike stats: 5-11, 182 lbs., 3.90 sec. shuttle (best of camp), 33.6 inch vertical jump ... 4.39 in the 40 {2003 FSU Camp}, 285 lb. bench press.

The Daytona Beach Mainland head coach is from Massillon, Ohio and also has coached in the Detroit Catholic League. So U-M has a shot at Atkins -- but he has also consistently said Miami and FSU were his leaders.

Note: other injured prospective campers:
- Kent. LB Brandon Logan (hamstring ... should perform).
- Mich. Ath. Antonio Bass (quad muscle ... may or may not perform/attend).
