NBPA Interviews: Alex Stepheson

California forward Alex Stepheson has been one of the more highly sought prospects in the class of 2006 thus far. The athletic post player made an unofficial visit to Michigan earlier in the season, but the Wolverines seemed to subsequently fall from his list. GBW caught up with him for the second time this year at the recent NBPA camp and he filled us in on where things stand.

How do you think this camp went for you?

“It went good. I’ve been played hard and been tried to play the best I could.”

What parts of your game are you looking to improve upon?

“I think I need to improve my perimeter skills. Dribbling and shooting especially. If I’m going to play any small forward, I have to get better in those areas.”

What position are you looking to play in college?

“I play the four in high school, but I’m not sure what I’ll play in college. I’ll probably play mostly the four though.”

What would you say is the staple of your game at this point?

“I think I hustle and run the floor really well.”

How did your high school season go?

“We finished 25-8 and lost in the state semi-finals. I averaged about 14 points and 13 rebounds.”

In recent updates it seems as though you have a preference for staying on the West Coast. Is that the case?

“I haven’t really determined a locational preference yet.”

Do you have a top 5 schools at this point?

“No, I don’t really have a top 5. I just have a list of schools I’m considering.”

Is Michigan on that list?

“Yes, I’m still considering Michigan. My sister just graduated from there.”

We hear Coach Ramsey made it by your school earlier this year.

“Yeah, he came by my school. He was able to watch me play and lift weights but I wasn’t able to talk to him.”

Have any of the schools on your list made scholarship offers?

“Yes. Arizona and Cal.”

Are those two schools pretty high on your list?

“They’re on my list, but I wouldn’t say that they’re high. I don’t really have a ‘high’ list right now.”

What are going to be some of the factors in your decision?

“I’ll be looking for good academics, a good coach, and how well I fit into the system.”

What are some of the other tournaments and camps you’ll be in this summer?

“I’ll be at the Big Time in Las Vegas and the Best of the Los Angeles with my team Pump N Run. I’ll also be at the Adidas Superstar Camp in Georgia.”

GBW will have more on Alex throughout the summer.
