Near-Commit Richards' Nike Scouting Report

Camper CB Chris Richards may've seemed to come out of nowhere to many fans when he told us he'd likely be a greyshirt U-M commitment.

But, those who have been following GBW closely knew him. After attending the SDST Nike Camp in April, we named Richards one of the camp's top 10 players and #2 DB - and one of 3 most likely U-M recruits from the camp.

Here's GBW's scouting report on Chris from the SDST Camp ... with one tiny sentence we'd left off at the time.

[First posted by GBW on April 24th ... our #3 player discussed from the SDST Nike Camp]

Cornerback Chris Richards from Monroe High School, in the San Fernando Valley of North Los Angeles.

Reminded us a little of: Ted Ginn.

Like Ginn a year before, Richards looks young, more like a sophomore than a rising senior. And when we stood with Chris' father/coach and chatted with him, his dad confirmed this to us, telling us Chris won't be 17 until the late summer. This means that, like Ginn, Richards still has to gain strength and develop physically. But Richards has a smooth, natural, makes-it-look-easy quality to his play, and he totally blanketed the receivers in the QB/WR/DB drills. As a CB he is 'a natural'.

His dad told us he measured 5-11 1/2, 170 lbs., and he ran a 4.45 sec. 40 and a very good 4.0 sec. shuttle; he also had an excellent 36 inch vertical.

As a junior Richards made 4 interceptions and 57 tackles including 35 unassisted.

So far [as of the SDST Nike)]he has been hearing from USC, Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame (offer), and Oregon State (offer). But, his dad told us, "I played with [Michigan defensive backs] Coach Ron English at Cal."

Note: the one thing we did not print at the time: Mr. Richards added, "Ron is Chris' godfather ... so if it works out that Michigan can use Chris, we'd love for him to go there."
