GBW Breaks U-M's New Kicker Commitment This AM!

Here is Zoltan Mesko's interview to us earlier this morning where he broke the commitment (we suddenly got busy with the Simpson story as well, so postponed putting this interview for a little while).

And, by the way, we also dispell an erroneous report of a second greyshirt commitment.

We at GBW had heard 'floating in the air' around Ann Arbor that there was a big kid punting 50 yarders at the Michigan Kicking Camp this past Friday-Sunday.

It's Zoltan Mesko from Twinsburg, Ohio (in the S. Cleveland suburbs). Zoltan told us this morning:

"I'm really excited right now! And you're the first to know! I called Coach Carr this morning -- we discussed things -- he offered me a Michigan scholarship -- and I committed!"

"I'm floating high as a kite right now!"

"I was actually in a situation where I was getting pressure from other colleges to make a decision ... Indiana, Northwestern (I went to a camp there too), Syracuse, and several of the MAC schools. Several of the Ivy League schools were after me as well. So I decided to make my decision -- and it's Michigan!"

Zoltan's height and weight:

"I'm 6-4, 230 pounds."

We asked Zoltan to talk about the Michigan Kicking Camp.

"Well I'm a punter. So for the punters they charted 20 punts in all ... ten at the beginning of the camp, and ten at end. My average distance was 48.5 yards. And it's my hang time that really got their attention -- my average hang time was 5.0 seconds. I have good flexibility, that's how I get the hang time. I was one of the five longest field goal kickers as well, but I'm really a punter."

The Ivies huh?

"Yeah. I have a 3.9 GPA and got a 1200 SAT score the first time ... I forgot to bring my calculator so I'll do better the next time I take it."

Zoltan is an Eastern European name?

"Yes. I came over to America with my parents from Romania when I was 11 years old."

And by the way. A report that U-M got a greyshirt commitment from DB Sam Williams from Westland John Glen is false. GBW has confirmed with sources that Williams has not been offered a scholarship by Michigan. According to the sources Williams is a player that U-M would have interest in, but would watch fall film on, etc.
