July 1: Michigan's Eight (+1) Commitments

Just the commitments!

Michigan has eight verbal commitments now ... perhaps half-way to a class of 16 ... and with possibly two more commitments to come over the next few weeks??

Five pre-Camp commitments:

- Commitment #1: Running back Kevin Grady ('02 U-M Camper, 5-9, 230 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 2.7 GPA) from East Grand Rapids, Mich. He attended the 2004 U-M Spring Game. The consensus #1 instate junior finished his junior season with 2,507 yards (including 235 in the State Championship victory) and 39 touchdowns. He committed Sept. 8, 2003, after attending the Houston game and before attending the Notre Dame game. He was not at the 2004 U-M Camp because he was in summer school getting ahead -- he plans to enroll at U-M in Jan. 2005. He is TheInsiders' #19 prospect, and TheInsiders has film on him.

- Commitment #2: Offensive lineman Justin Schifano ('03 U-M Camper, '03 PSU Nike stats: 6-4 1/2, 302 lbs., 5.1 in the 40, 30 bench press reps. of 185 lbs. ... 400 lb. bench press, "A" avg./qualified) from Webster, N.Y., Schroeder. He attended the 2004 U-M Spring Game. He told us he actually committed during his unofficial visit for the Notre Dame game Sept. 15, but he made his commitment public on Jan. 15. Schifano is a three-year starter at offensive tackle for Schroeder High School, which won the state title his freshman and sophomore seasons and lost its only game his junior season in the state championship game. It's quite possible that if Schifano had not committed so early, he'd be in the running for the top O-line prospect in the country. Justin was the top OL performer at the PSU Nike Camp as a soph. in 2003. He is TheInsiders' #39 East prospect.

- Commitment #3: Wide receiver Mario Manningham ('04 U-M Camper, 6-0, 180 lbs., 4.4 in the 40) from Warren, Ohio, Harding (the alma mater of Prescott Burgess). Manningham, a long-time Michigan fan, made an unofficial visit to Michigan for the Indiana game, and committed to the Wolverines on Feb. 5, the day after Signing Day. As a junior he made 32 receptions, for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns as Harding went 10-1. He is TheInsiders' #84 prospect, and TheInsiders has film on him.

- Commitment #4: Wide receiver Laterryal Savoy ('04 U-M Camp visitor, LSU Junior Day: 6-2 1/2, 196 lbs.; LSU Nike stats: 4.59 in the 40, 4.18 sec. shuttle, 37 inch vertical jump, 14 bench press reps. ... 300 lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA/14 ACT) from Mamou, La. As a junior he nabbed 44 passes for 783 yards and nine touchdowns.

- Commitment #5: Cornerback Johnny Sears (USC camp stats: 6-1 1/2, 175 lbs., 4.4 in the 40 {electronic}, 34 inch vertical jump) from Fresno, Calif., Edison. Johnny is an unknown because he had to sit out his junior season after transferring ... he also had an emergency appendectomy the day of the Stanford Nike Camp. Still, the Edison DB coach, who has sent many kids to Div. 1 college programs (including Ricky Manning), highly recommends him.

Three (plus 1) "Camp Commitments:"

- Punter Zoltan Mesko (6-4, 230 lbs.) from Twinsburg, Ohio. After averaging 48.5 yards punting at the U-M Kicking Camp (with an astounding 5.0 sec. hang time), Mesko was offered, and committed.

- Fullback Mister Simpson (5-9, 220 lbs., 4.5 in the 40 ... Nike stats: 31 bench press reps, 35.8 inch vertical jump) from Cincinnati Colerain. As a junior he was second team Division one Ohio All-State, after gaining 1,640 yards and 23 touchdowns; as a sophomore he rushed for 1,079 yards and 16 touchdowns.

- Defensive end/outside linebacker Chris McLaurin (6-4, 230 lbs., 4.80 (electronic, U-M Camp) from Orchard Lake, Mich., St. Mary's. As a junior the sleek and fast defensive end made 50 tackles and 9 1/2 sacks. He'd also attended U-M for the MSU basketball game this past winter.

- A sleeper cornerback who committed as a 'greyshirt' for the 05/06 class (enrolling in Jan. '06): Chris Richards (2 day U-M Camper Mon./Tues., SDST Nike Stats: 5-11 1/2, 170 lbs., 4.45 in the 40, 4.0 sec. shuttle, 36 inch vertical jump) from Monroe, Calif.

And ... possibly two more to watch for in the coming weeks:

- Offensive lineman Cory Zirbel ('04 U-M Camper, 6-6, 290 lbs., 5.18 in the 40 {electronic, U-M Camp}) from Murray, Kent. He won an offer at the U-M Camp. Corey went from the U-M Camp to the OSU Camp, and is on his wat to Wisconsin and Minnesota ... he may come home next week and decide. He is TheInsiders' #51 Southeast prospect.

- Linebacker Brandon Logan (02 & 03 U-M Camper, US Army Combine stats: 6-0, 189 lbs., 4.72 in the 40, 11 bench press reps., 26 inch vertical jump.) from Lexington, Kent., Catholic. Brandon did not attend the '04 U-M Camp because of a hamstring injury, but he is a two-time Michigan Camper and has a U-M offer. He attended a 2004 Spring Practice. He has offers from U-M, Tennessee, Louisville and Kentucky. He told us he will make an unofficial visit to U-M this summer, and he may make an summer decision. He is TheInsiders' #72 Southeast prospect.
