Updated Best Guess Recruiting Class: DL's

In late August we said that the most 'fluid' position group in our Best Guess Recruiting Class List was Defensive Linemen. And we weren't kidding -- a couple of recruits have been added to the list.

Defensive Tackles
Needs: 2 (or 3)
Commitments: 0
Recruits: James McKinney, Terrance Taylor, Marques Slocum, Kyle Moore, Hivera Green

- The once-and-hopefully-future commitment: DL James McKinney ('04 U-M Camper, US Army Combine stats: 6-1 1/2, 274 lbs., 5.10 in the 40, 14 bench press reps., 24 1/2 inch vertical jump, 2.7 GPA) from Louisville, Kent., Central. The latest as of early Sept.: he is NOT going to graduate in Dec. He will make official visits to Michigan (Dec.), Nebraska (Oct. 10), Clemson (Oct. 22), Oklahoma (Dec. 10), and possibly Kentucky, Louisville, OSU, or LSU. In late Aug. he told the Louisville Courier-Journal that U-M still leads. McKinney was a full week U-M camper, and worked out at both tight end and defensive lineman. He is TheInsiders #75 prospect, and has been chosen to play in the U.S. Army All-American Game.

- DT Terrance Taylor ('03 U-M Camper, 6-0, 285 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 2.8 GPA/20 ACT) from Muskegon, Mich. He made an official visit to LSU the Sept 10 weekend, and afterward told us, "It's still Michigan and LSU." He attended the late-July U-M Junior Academic Day. He is TheInsiders #20 Midwest prospect.

- Defensive/offensive tackle Marques Slocum (PSU Nike stats: 6-6, 330 lbs., 5.09 in the 40 ... 300 lb. bench press) from Philadelphia West Catholic. He's in the middle of an unofficial visit trip with his coach, and made a stop at U-M on Monday, July 26. He is also visiting Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Notre Dame and Michigan State (Sept. 17 visit for ND game?) on this trip, and he's also considering LSU, Virginia, Miami, Maryland, North Carolina and others. He plans to make an official visit to U-M -- in fact Michigan may LEAD, with Miami (who has not offered yet). Slocum grew up a U-M fan and U-M has offered him. He is TheInsiders #70 prospect.

- Defensive tackle/end Kyle Moore (6-6, 255 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 3.0 GPA/960 SAT) from Warner Robbins, Ga., Houston County. Moore has family in Detroit, and would like to make one of his official visits to U-M, along with Florida, FSU and Georgia. In nid-Aug. he told us U-M and Georgia may lead. He is TheInsiders' #41 South prospect.

- Defensive tackle/end Hivera Green (6-5, 260 lbs., 4.75 in the 40) from Conway, S.C. In late July he tried to commit to U-M ... but things will at least hold off until the fall when he can visit. In late Aug he said Michigan, Florida and Virginia Tech lead. The question regarding Green may be, is he a DE? He is TheInsiders #58 East prospect.

Defensive Ends/Outside Linebackers/Tight Ends
Needs: 1 or 2
Commitments: 1 (Chris McLaurin)
Recruits: Edward Dickson, possibly Will Powers, Carson Butler, Chris Joppru

- Commitment #6: Defensive end/outside linebacker Chris McLaurin ('04 U-M Camper, 6-4, 230 lbs., 4.80 {electronic} in the 40) from Orchard Lake, Mich., St. Mary's. He won a U-M camp offer and committed soon after. He'd also attended U-M for the MSU basketball game this past winter. As a junior the sleek and fast defensive end made 50 tackles and 9 1/2 sacks.

- Tight end/defensive end Edward Dickson (6-6, 250 lbs.) from Bellflower, Calif. Dickson has a U-M offer, and has family in Michigan. It may come down to USC or U-M for him, but Oklahoma is a possibility as well. He is TheInsiders' #100 West prospect.

- possible recruit: Tight end/defensive end Carson Butler (6-5, 235 lbs.) from Detroit Renaissance. He made a U-M unofficial visit for the Miami game. Butler had to sit out his junior year after transferring from Lansing Waverly. He did play hoops on the Renaisssance team last winter. U-M wants to see film of his first couple games.

- possible recruit: Tight end/defensive end Will Powers (Stan Nike stats: 6-4, 221 lbs, 4.56 sec. 40, a 4.63 sec. shuttle, a 32.1 inch vertical jump, and 20 bench press reps. ... 3.7 GPA/1380 SAT) from San Mateo, Calif., Serra (Tom Brady's alma mater). Powers has been offered by Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Cal ... U-M wants to see film of his first couple games. He is TheInsiders' No. 11 West player.

- possible recruit: Tight end/Defensive end Chris Joppru ('04 U-M Camper, 6-4, 220 lbs.) from Minnetonka, Minn. The brother of former Wolverine Bennie Joppru did well at the U-M Camp, but does not have major offers as yet. Could he possibly become a late-type recruit?
