Ouimet's Top 25 (Week 6)

1. USC – Not only has the best Quarterback in the country, but they might have the best duo in running backs LenDale White and Reggie Bush! If you had those three guys in your back field you would expect one excellent season and I think that is exactly what Coach Carroll is looking for this year! Coach Carroll not only does a good job rotating those two tailbacks, but offensive coordinator Norm Chow and Coach Carroll do an excellent job game planning every week. This team is well coached and is ready for every game each week! They are going to need to be this week as they will take on California in Los Angeles and are looking for revenge in this game after the overtime loss that knocked them out of the National Title game! The Trojans have as tough a road ahead of them the next two weeks in the country with California and Arizona State. Look for an excited team that did not play this week, but must play controlled and not over pursuing or over thinking their game plan! Look for a great game and a close one in Los Angeles, but a Trojan victory.

2. Oklahoma – Coach Stoops can't ask more from his team as they deliver another victory, while freshman running back Adrian Peterson ran for 146 yards with a score. QB Jason White had another solid game with 151 yards passing in the process of completing 15 of 24 against Texas Tech in the 28-13 victory in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooner defense was able to keep the Texas Tech high powered offense out of the red zone most of the day and were able to contain this offense most of the day, while in the process keeping them off the field longer than usual. Now the Sooners now get the opportunity to beat Texas again this week as the Longhorns will be the next opponent up for Oklahoma. The Sooners haven't had any problems in the past from Texas, but this year might be something different as you can look for a tight controlled offensive game with ball controlling style. We'll have a close one, but the Sooners experience in big games might be an advantage.

3. Texas – The Longhorns put the rout on Baylor this week in a 44-14 victory and look ready for Oklahoma this week in the Red River Shootout in Dallas. The Longhorns have lost to the Sooners in four straight years and if RB Cedric Benson has anything to say this year will be the year it changes! Running back Cedric Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns as he moved past Earl Campbell into second place on the Texas rushing chart, while he only trails Ricky Williams now! QB Vincent Young and the wide receivers of the Longhorns are going to need a big game this week and come up with some big plays against the Oklahoma Sooners to stop this streak. The winner of this game as set the stage for a possible Big 12 championship and the National Title game in Miami!

4. Miami (Fl) – The Canes were able to shut down the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech with four turnovers that led to the 27-3 victory by the Canes. QB Brock Berlin completed 10 of 20 passes for 200 yards with an interception and RB Frank Gore was able to rush for 115 yards as the Canes remain undefeated at 4-0. The Hurricanes now will play host to the best team in conference USA in Louisville and the Cardinals are trying to make a run at the BCS, which is the reason the Canes must win or their title hopes will fall out the door. This will be a physical game, but look for the Canes to pull this out at home in 10 days on National TV as Coach Larry Coker always has the Canes well prepared for big games!

5. Georgia – The Bulldogs manhandled the LSU Tigers at home in Athens, while the offense finally showed up in a game to show every body what they are capable of actually doing offensively in the 45-16 win. Coach Mark Richt has to be happy with that performance, but can't celebrate too long with Tennessee coming to Athens and they are looking to rebound after Auburn. QB David Greene was 10 of 19 for 172 yards with 5 touchdowns on the day and now is the holder of a Georgia record with 36 victories as a starter. The offense was able to find all their playmakers, while on defense they were putting pressure and making things challenging for the Tigers all day! The Bulldogs now have put themselves in position to win the SEC and make a run at the National Title game in Miami, Florida. Let's not look too far with Tennessee and than Arkansas in three weeks. This is a team that has lost a few it shouldn't have the past three years, so the question is will the Bulldogs maintain this focus and intensity the rest of the season?

6. California – The Bears were able to get out to a huge lead in the rout of Oregon State and never letting up as they were able to win on the road game 49-7 this week. QB Aaron Rodgers has another outstanding game completing 12 of 16 for 140 yards and after a 20 day layoff they are now 3-0 on the year. Not only is the offense running on full cylinders, but the defense was able to hold Oregon State to 91 yards rushing. This was a revenge game for the Bears since Cal has lost to them every year since Coach Jeff Tedford took over this program in 2002. Now the Bears are moving forward and will try to give the Trojans back to back losses as they travel to Los Angeles this week to take on the Number one team in the country. Not only the Pac Ten Championship is on the line, but a possible bid for a spot in the National Title game!

7. Auburn – The Tigers are playing some great football right now after beating soundly beating Tennessee this week up in Knoxville 34-10. They have now beaten their two main SEC rivals in LSU and Tennessee to get out to a hot start in SEC play with QB Jason Campbell playing very well by completing 16 of 23 for 252 yards. He is in full control of this offense and has the running backs to complement him in the backfield. It wasn't too long ago when they were trying to run Coach Tuberville out of town, but now he has the Tigers in the Top 10 and out in front in the SEC. Defensively they were able to control the Vols two freshmen Quarterbacks and never let those two get comfortable in the pocket all day long as they constantly put pressure on them with continuous blitzes. Louisiana Tech is up next for the Tigers who have one of the best running backs in the country in Ryan Moats and they are coming of an upset victory over Fresno State, so this game might be closer than people expect.

8. Florida State – Coach Bowden has found the Quarterback of the future is Wyatt Sexton has in continues to improve and learn with his father by his side throughout the whole process. Wyatt's dad is the running backs coach and has watched is son in back to back weeks as Chris Rix is still injured. I will put in prospective what QB Wyatt Sexton has done the last two weeks. He is 43 of 66 for 406 yards with four touchdowns, while the Seminoles were able to win 38-16 against North Carolina this past week. To say the least we definitely have a Quarterback controversy in Tallahassee and Wyatt Sexton looks like he might maintain the starting position. The Seminoles now travel to Syracuse this weekend as they play a non-conference game this week. It's not always the easiest place to play up in the Dome in New York, but I would look for continued success for this Seminole team this week!

9. Purdue – Quarterback Kyle Orton has ended the streak at Notre Dame for the first time since 1974 for the Boilermakers in the 41-16 victory on Saturday. QB Kyle Orton was 21 of 31 for 385 yards, which included the 97 yarder to Taylor Stubblefield. Coach Joe Tiller is doing a great job with the execution of this offense and the use of Orton's abilities within the game plan. Don't be surprised in what this kid can do and look for him to continue his Heisman Trophy chances as he is trying to make sure he has a seat in New York City. The defense did a great job for the Boilermakers and was able to create turnovers, while also shutting down most of their offensive threats. Now the Boilermakers are headed to Penn State to try and end another streak against Penn State. Look for another win for the Boilermakers as the corners of Penn State can't keep up with this high powered offense Joe Tiller has rolling like a train. By the way Notre Dame is not that good of a football team!

10. Wisconsin – The Badgers got their tailback back this week and Anthony Davis made up for lost time with 213 yards rushing on 27 carries and three touchdowns in the 24-7 victory. The Badgers are now 5-0 and Davis will not only keep the chains moving but help put more points on the board for Wisconsin. The Illini just could not get anything going offensively and punted on all five of their first half possessions and the Badgers just might have the best defense in the Big Ten as they have forced their last two opponents to use three quarterbacks each. The true test for the Badgers and this defense will be the next two weeks on the road with back to back games against Ohio State and Purdue. If they can win the next two games they will win the Big Ten Championship! Look for a low scoring game this week in Columbus!

11. Utah - The Utes are the best BCS buster in the country and there was not a question about if they were prepared after back to back losses the last two years to New Mexico as they dominated the game in the 28-7 victory on the road. If they can stay undefeated you might see the Utes in a BCS game. QB Alex Smith is having an outstanding year and is very efficient every week. Not only did Smith have a great game completing 14 of 28 for 167 yards, but WR Savoy had 11 catches for 150 yards as the Utes are now 5-0 on the year. The offense wasn't the only side of the ball that was effective, but the defense held New Mexico to only 157 yards of offense while Utah was able to manage 466 total yards. Coach Meyer has this team very focused and is on a mission as they now have a bye week before they will play host to North Carolina.

12. Florida – The Gators thought they would win this one in easy fashion with a 38-7 lead, but the Razorbacks scored 23 unanswered points with QB Matt Jones leading the way. Thankfully for the Gators QB Chris Leak was able to build that huge lead and preserve the victory for the Gators. He was 23 of 38 for 322 yards with three touchdowns, while getting the guys around him out to a great start in this game. Chris was able to make plays by throwing accurately and making great decisions in the pocket, while RB Ciatrick Fason had another gave the Gators some hard runs for 68 yards on the ground. It doesn't get any easier for the Gators this week when the LSU Tigers come to town this week and will be very upset after getting hammered by Georgia. Can the Gators continue to win or will they struggle in back to back SEC games like they've done in past years under Zook? This will be the game for Coach Zook and the Gators not only to answer the critics, but to stay in the SEC Title race! This will be a great one down in the Swamp!

13. Virginia – The Cavaliers are a good solid football team that is well coach and are 4-0 after beating all four of their opponents soundly. They really haven't been tested yet this season, so this Thursday game against Clemson will let us know exactly how good the Cavaliers really are this season. We know they are a good team, but will this defense of Coach Groh respond against the Tigers of Clemson this week. On offense Quarterback Hagans has played well for the Cavaliers and they might have the best Tight End in the country in Miller. This will not be an easy game for the Cavaliers, so look for a close one for Virginia. Coach Groh will see just how much this team has grown and how they will respond to a good team. With the ten days off before this game with the Cavaliers be rusty or extremely sharp in this contest with the Tigers?

14. Louisville – The Cardinals offense just keeps rolling as they win again this week 59-7 over East Carolina as RB Eric Shelton ran for 129 yards and five touchdowns, which tied a school record. RB Eric Shelton is running well and is why he signed with Florida State out of high school, but new right away he might not get his chance down south and came back to Louisville. There are many other teams around the country that would love to have this kid! Coach Petrino has done an excellent job after taking over the program and has taken even higher as the Cardinals are now looking to Miami of Florida this weekend in Miami. The Cardinal have outscored their opponents 70-7 in the third quarter this season and must continue as they have to come out of halftime ready to score some points against the Hurricanes who always play great football in the second half of a game. This is going to be a great game and look for some points to be scored in this one! This game will let us know if Louisville is a Top 10 team or not!

15. Arizona State – The Sun Devils are for real and are out to their best start since the 1996 Rose Bowl Season with a 28-13 victory over Oregon on the road in Eugene. QB Andrew Walter was 14 of 23 passing for 164 yards and didn't play is best game and the Ducks defense was swarming around all day, but was able to come up with some big plays when they were needed. Coach Koetter had done an excellent job of rebuilding this program and you know things are good when you are not at your best and still win by double digits. The Sun Devils are able to make plays when plays are needed on both sides of the ball, which is not only a result of the plays as well as the coaching staff! The Sun Devils couldn't ask for a bye at a better time as they will now get two weeks to prepare for USC, which will be on the road in Los Angeles. Look for a great game and a close one as the Trojans will be coming off the Cal game!

16. Oklahoma State – The Cowboys defeated Iowa State 36-7 with running back Vernand Morency leading the way with 143 yards and two touchdowns for his sixth straight 100 yard games. The Cowboys are not just scoring points, but are playing some defense too as they have a plus 13 turnover margin this year. The Cowboys and Coach Miles are 4-0 for the first time since 1997 and have a tailback to make a run at the Big 12 Title. Vernand Morecny was the leading rusher in the country before this game, but now is second to Cedric Benson of Texas. Now they Cowboys will get ready to travel for the first time in a month as they will go to Colorado and try to stay undefeated. Look for Coach Miles to have his team prepared in Boulder this week and to continue to stay undefeated on the season. Can Vernand take over the rushing lead after this week, he might since Cedric Benson is going to face Oklahoma this week?

17. Tennessee – The Vols were dominated on both sides of the ball and were looking back from the beginning of the game. You knew it wasn't going to be good day for the Vols after they called a timeout before their first offensive play of the day. Quarterback Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer never looked comfortable all day and were scrambling a few too many times in the 34-10 loss to the Tigers. The Auburn Tigers came in with a solid defensive package to control this Volunteer offense and the two freshman Quarterbacks. These freshmen coaches have a lot to learn this year and they are going to continue to learn as the SEC play continues this week as they will travel down the road to take on Georgia. This is a must win for the Volunteers, but will be a tough task with two freshman Quarterbacks. Look for another loss, which may force them out of the Top 25 and the SEC title chase!

18. UCLA – The Bruins only loss on the year is to Oklahoma State in which they couldn't stop their running game, but have played well and easily beat San Diego State this week in a 33-10 victory in the Rose Bowl. They are a much better team this year and are playing better sound football than how they finished the season last year. RB Maurice Drew was able to rush 21 times for 161 yards against San Diego State and the defense was able to limit the Azetecs on offense by controlling the line of scrimmage without any big plays down the field. The Bruins now have Arizona coming into the Rose Bowl this week and look for another win this week as the Wildcats just don't have the athletes to play up and down the field with UCLA. Keep your eye on this team as they will travel to California in two weeks.

19. Michigan – The Wolverines went down to Bloomington and beat Indiana 35-14 on Saturday. They did make some mistakes offensively and on special teams, but the team continues to add more offensively every week for Quarterback Chad Henne. Mr. Henne is no longer a freshman Quarterback and look for this base offense to get more complex very soon as Coach Loeffler has done an outstanding job getting this kid prepared every week for their opponent. Once a kid the young kid had a good game going 17 of 21 for 316 yards against a very average team, but it is good solid game for us to prepare for Minnesota this week. Look for continued success this week for the Wolverines, especially in the air for the offense as the Gophers are not a sound team defensively. Look for another big game for WR Braylon Edwards as the offense should be able to take advantage of very average corners that Minnesota will put out on the field. The Big Ten conference is very average this year and it has a lot to do with young offenses across the conference, but Michigan should be thankful they don't play Wisconsin this year! Look for another victory as we get closer to the game with Purdue!

20. West Virginia – The Mountaineers lost to Virginia Tech has the National Title game hopes are out the door now, but still can win the Big East Championship now that Virginia Tech as moved onto the ACC. The Mountaineers could never overcome the 16-0 lead the Hokies had going into the second half, but did close the gap to 19-13 in the loss in Blacksburg this past weekend. This was a revenge game for Virginia Tech as the Mountaineers embarrassed them last year as the Hokies lost their national title aspirations in that 28-7 loss. Coach Rodriquez now needs to get his team refocused and hone in on the Big East Championship! The defense for the Mountaineers did play well and they need to take that momentum into the game against UConn in 11 days! This game will let you know if the Mountaineers are for real or is UConn the Big East favorite now!

21. Maryland – With a bye this week hopefully Coach Friedgen has soared up the offensive line and the mistakes on offense, which continues to turn the ball over for the Terps. The Terps did have a solid win against Duke two weeks ago, but must improve both offensively and defensively before they play host to Georgia Tech this week. With back to back home games the next two weeks look for a focused team that will play with passion and deliver a couple of wins to stay in the Top 25. The Terps only loss on the season is a 19-16 loss to West Virginia and might be a better team than people think this year, so keep your eye on this team as they might be in the Top 25 for a few more weeks. Maryland likes to play sound football and control the ball on offense with 40 plus minutes of time of possession if possible. It not only keeps the defense off the field, but leads to points. This will be a well prepare team this week!

22. Ohio State - The Buckeye's had a 24 game winning streak in this series and was their first loss in Evanston since the 1958 season. The Buckeye offense had a very average day and finally found something in the fourth quarter as QB Justin Zwick completed 18 of 38 for 211 yards with 90 of those yards in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Buckeye's they were out gained 444 to 308 on the day and must improve defensively in a hurry as they will host Wisconsin this week in Columbus. The Big Ten is very weak this year and this is just more evidence of that being the case. The Buckeye's need to get the defense fixed very fast and get those Linebackers back into blitzing situations to force some more turnovers this week. Remember that the Badgers did beat Ohio State last year!

23. LSU – The Tigers not only have lost two games to Georgia and Auburn, but are fighting to stay in the Top 25 after sharing the National Championship last year with USC. The Tiger defense was incapable of shutting down the Bulldog offense all day and was getting beat for big play after big play. Coach Saban needs to get a good week of practice in and needs to regain the focus defensively with now having to go play the Florida Gators this week in the Swamp. This is a must win for LSU and Coach Saban this week or they will fall out of the Top 25 and out of the SEC race for sure. They are almost out right now, but still have a slim chance if things were to fall right for the Tigers. They not only were beaten by the Bulldogs they were embarrassed all day on both sides of the ball. They were dominated and need to get back to sound football and making plays both defensively and offensively. Look for a better game plan from the coaches this week and a close game down in the Swamp.

24. Minnesota – The running game was not at its best, but RB Laurence Maroney ran for 144 yards and a touchdown in the 16-7 win in Minneapolis this past Saturday against the Lions. We're they looking past Penn State or are they just not as good as people think? The Gophers are now 5-0, but do struggle against passing teams that they face. The Lions had many scoring chances but could not put the ball in the end zone or blew it on special teams with two blocked field goals. This Gopher team has beaten Toledo (3-2), Illinois State (2-2), Northwestern (2-3), Colorado State (1-4) and now Penn State (2-3) so don't look for this winning streak to continue as they will be playing in the Big House this week in Ann Arbor with the big boys! This team missing their Quarterback in Kaliq and will not get an early lead in this game if they right Michigan defense will show up! Look for them to drop out of the Top 25 this week as they are the most over ranked team in this nation!

25. South Carolina – The Gamecocks are in the Top 25 and Coach Holtz is doing an excellent job with this team so far on the season! South Carolina only has one loss on the year which was against Georgia in a 20-16 loss in the second week of the season. The Gamecocks we're in control of this week's game against Alabama from the start in the 20-3 win on the road and I look for that to continue this week as they will host Mississippi at home. You might not know many players on this team, but they play as a team and are well coached. The Gamecocks are well prepared for every opponent and are trying to get an SEC Title this year, which means they can not afford another loss! Keep your eye on the Gamecocks, because they might make some noise, especially when you play sound, fundamental, and responsible defense!

Others to watch:

26. Stanford – Should have beaten USC and travels to Notre Dame this week! Top 25 soon?
27. Boise State – They only beat SMU by 18, so a win in two weeks against Fresno State and in!
28. Arkansas – Losses to Texas and Georgia keep them out, but be patient they are good team!
29. Texas A&M – Only one loss to Utah, so this might be a better team than people think!
30. Virginia Tech – Two tough losses to USC and NC State, but did beat WVU this past week!
31. UAB – Wins over Cincinnati and Memphis, with the only loss to FSU with Mississippi State next!
32. Missouri – They won, but not good enough yet, but wait because Texas in two weeks!
33. North Carolina State – They did lose to Ohio State, but another win this week!
34. Southern Mississippi – A win at South Florida, but Houston up this week on Thursday!
35. Navy – Are they really better than Notre Dame, we'll find out in two weeks!
36. Boston College – Only one loss to Wake Forest, so be patient with some big games soon!
37. UConn – All win against Pittsburgh and West Virginia soon! Only one loss, so we'll see soon!
38. Louisiana Tech – Two losses to Tennessee and Miami with Auburn up next!
39. Fresno State – UTEP up next than Boise State in two weeks!
40. Iowa – A win against Michigan State, but Ohio State in two weeks!
41. Nebraska – A scary win against Kansas and Texas Tech up next, not a good sign!
42. Notre Dame – Not a very good football team and Stanford next, with Navy to follow!
