Mystery Official Visitor Revealed
The recruiting situation at quarterback for Michigan took on a new dimension with the sudden emergence of true-freshman Chad Henne. Henne led the Wolverines onto the field to start the season against Miami (Ohio) when announced starter Matt Gutierrez was injured in the week before the game. Now it appears the Michigan staff has been in contact with former targets, one being Tuscola, N.C. quarterback Jonathan Crompton who committed to Tennesse in June, once again proving that recruiting doesn't end until Signing Day.
GoBlueWolverine Magazine spoke with Crompton to get an idea of what was going on with his recruitment and if a visit to Michigan was on the horizon. "I just talked to Coach Campbell and Coach Loeffler (Wednesday) night," he said. "And I pretty sure I'll be taking a visit to Michigan for the Michigan State game (Oct. 30)." Crompton said the Michigan staff has been in contact with him since Sept. 1, when, under NCAA rules, college coaches were allowed to contact recruits.
The 6 foot 3, 205-pound Crompton was quick to add that he hasn't decommitted from Tennessee, just that he wanted to look around and make sure the Vols had the best situation for him. With nearly 60 scholarship offers there are plenty of schools who would love to see the talented hurler change his mind, but at the moment Michigan is the only one getting a look. "I don't have any other visits set up," Crompton said. "I don't know if I'll take anymore or not." Crompton said he last spoke with the Tennessee coaches last week and didn't know if they were aware of his intentions to take other visits.
Why the interest in other schools? Crompton wouldn't go into detail other than to say he wanted to be certain of his choice, but there has been speculation that the performance of Tennessee freshmen quarterbacks Brent Schaeffer and Erik Ainge caused Crompton to step back a bit.
Tuscola is 5-1 on the season, coming off a tight 24-21 loss to Franklin. The Mountaineers take on Roberson tonight. Crompton is Scout.com's #82 prospect.
