Oct. 20 Best Guess Rec. List: QB's, RB's, WR's

GoBlueWolverine's mid-October Best Guess Recruiting Class List: Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers

Most of the needs at quarterback, running back and wide receiver have been filled -- except for one elite recruit who is perhaps one of U-M's top three recruits overall. And ... in our opinion U-M really would like a quarterback in this class now! And ... is there a 'mystery' RB recruit?

Quarterback
Needs: 0 or 1
Commitments: 0
Recruits: Antonio Bass (see WR's), Jon Crompton

Running Backs
Needs: 2
Commitments: 2 (Kevin Grady, Mister Simpson (FB))
Recruits: 0 ... OR ... a surprise ...

Wideouts
Needs: 2 or 3
Commitments: 2 (Mario Manningham, Laterryal Savoy)
Recruits: Antonio Bass, Selwyn Lymon

QUARTERBACKS

- Athlete (WR/DB/QB) Antonio Bass (Possible Sept 25 Iowa Game visit, 6-1, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 3.0 GPA/21 ACT) from Jackson, Mich. He made an unofficial visit for the Oct. 9 Minn. game. He made a Labor Day weekend official visit to Virginia Tech, and it's very close between U-M and V-Tech ... but he told GBW on Oct. 8 that U-M has the slight edge. He may also make official visits to Notre Dame and Florida, plus MSU. He attended the late July U-M Junior Academic Day. He is also working out with former U-M great Stan Edwards' track team. He is TheInsiders' #50 prospect.

-Michigan would REALLY like a dropback QB in thei class; one possibility: Quarterback Jonathan Crompton (Oct. 29 MSU game official visit, 6-4, 215 lbs., 4.9 in the 40) from Waynesville, N.C., Tuscola. Crompton is a Tenn. commitment, but with the Vols playing two frosh QB's Crompton is visiting U-M.

RUNNING BACKS

With Grady and Simpson committed, the 04/05 RB need is filled.

- Commitment #1: Kevin Grady ('02 U-M Camper, 5-9, 230 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 2.7 GPA) from East Grand Rapids, Mich. Grady finished his junior season with 2,507 yards (including 235 in the State Championship victory) and 39 touchdowns. He committed Sept. 8, 2003, after attending the Houston game. He was not at the 2004 U-M Camp because he was in summer school getting ahead -- he plans to enroll at U-M in Jan. 2005. He is TheInsiders' #19 prospect.

- And Michigan picked up a fullback Commitment (Commit #7) from camp: Fullback Mister Simpson (5-9, 220 lbs., 4.5 in the 40 ... Nike stats: 31 bench press reps, 35.8 inch vertical jump) from Cincinnati Colerain. As a junior he gained 1,640 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was offered at camp and committed. Simpson grew up in Southfield, Mich.

WIDE RECEIVERS

With two commitments in the class, we assume that U-M is only after one additional WR/ATH.

- Commitment #3: Mario Manningham (6-0, 180 lbs., 4.4 in the 40) from Warren, Ohio, Harding. Mario is growing and developing physically ... he's an inch taller at 6-0 now, and he's also noticeably stronger. He reportedly ran the camp's second fastest 40 time. Manningham made an unofficial visit to Michigan for the '03 Indiana game, and committed to the Wolverines the day after Signing Day. As a junior he made 32 receptions, for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is TheInsiders' #84 prospect.

- Commitment #4: Laterryal Savoy ('04 U-M Camp visitor, Nike stats: 6-2 1/2, 196 lbs., 4.59 in the 40, 4.18 sec. shuttle, 37 inch vertical jump ... 300 lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA/14 ACT) from Mamou, La. As a junior he nabbed 44 passes for 783 yards and nine touchdowns. He attended the U-M summer camp and solidified his commitment.

- Wide Receiver Selwyn Lymon (6-4, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 15 ACT/770 SAT) from Ft. Wayne, Ind., Harding. He lists Purdue (the fav?), Ohio State, Wisconsin (the top 3?), Michigan, and Penn State. Depending on how the recruiting season goes, he could become a 'hot' U-M recruit at some point.
