Montoya Notches First Shutout of the Season

A strong second period combined with a shutout performance by Wolverine goaltender Al Montoya carried No. 4 Michigan to a 3-0 victory tonight as the Wolverines struck first in this weekend's home-and-home series against the Ferris State Bulldogs.

The first period saw lots of action between the blue lines, but neither team was able to establish momentum and it took until the second period for any scoring to get underway.

Kevin Porter got Michigan on the board at the 7:25 mark of the second period after the Wolverine's broke through on a two-on-one breakaway. After slipping past his man at the blue line, Porter skated deep into the FSU zone, and a cross ice pass from Andrew Ebbett found its mark perfectly and Porter beat Bulldog goalie Mike Brown to make it 1-0.

Just over five minutes later, the Wolverines beat Brown for the second time of the period taking advantage of a rebound in front of the opposing net. Andrew Ebbett and Jeff Tambellini each tallied assists on the second goal which was scored by Milan Gajic as he belted the puck over the goal line from his back to provide Red Berenson and his Wolverines some insurance.

Al Montoya would carry the Wolverines from there and Michigan cruised through the third period. Montoya notched 17 saves in his first shut out of the season including two breakaway saves to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

Wolverine defender Mike Brown added a short handed goal in the third period of play to make the final 3-0.

Game two of the home-and-home series takes place tonight as the Wolverines head up to Big Rapids for a 7:00 start.
