QUARTERBACKS

- Athlete (WR/QB) Antonio Bass (Dec. 3 U-M official visit, 6-1, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 3.0 GPA/21 ACT) from Jackson, Mich. He made an unofficial visit for the Oct. 9 Minn. game. He made a Labor Day weekend official visit to Virginia Tech, and it's very close between U-M and V-Tech. He made an official visit to LSU the Nov. 12 weekend, and will also visit MSU (Dec. 10) and make a decision soon after - unless he decides to go ahead and visit Notre Dame. He attended the late July U-M Junior Academic Day. 2004 stats: he rushed for 1,246 yards on140 carries and 15 touchdowns. He also passed for 528 yards on 25 of 75 passing with four touchdowns and four interceptions. He is TheInsiders' #50 prospect.

- Quarterback Jason Forcier (Dec. 3 U-M official visit, '04 U-M Camper, 6-2 1/2, 205 lbs., 4.57 in the 40) from San Diego, Calif., St. Augustine. Forcier has been an ASU commitment, but he but he just received a U-M offer now and is visiting the Dec. 3rd weekend. Forcier also was a 2002 U-M camper, and attended the OSU game in '03. His dad is from Michigan and Jason grew up a U-M fan. He finished his senior season with 2765 yards passing with 36 touchdowns and seven interceptions; a 62 percent completion rate; 1014 yards rushing with 16 touchdowns on the ground.

- Quarterback Jonathan Garner (Dec. 10 official visit, Miami Nike Stats: 6-4, 206 lbs., 4.98 in the 40, 4.56 sec. shuttle, 25.5 inch vertical jump) from Daytona Beach, Calif., Mainland. He is a Fla. commitment, but has a U-M offer now and is visiting with teammate CB Avery Atkins. Going into the state semi-finals, Garner has completed over 50% of his passes, for 1880 yards, 18 passing touchdowns, 6 rushing touchdowns, with 4 interceptions ... on a running Mainland team. The Mainland HS coach is from Ohio and is friends with some of the U-M assistant coaches. Garner was an Elite 11 Quarterback this past summer.

- Possible recruit: Quarterback Chad Somerville ('04 U-M camper, Iowa Nike stats: 6-2, 175 lbs., 5.0 in the 40 {4.9 at the CMU camp}, 4.34 sec. shuttle, 27 inch vertical, 10 bench press reps. ... 3.0 GPA/16 ACT) from Mason, Mich. Playing for a primarily running team (MAson is 7-2 foinf into the Oct. 29 weekend), Somerville is completing over 60% of his passes for over 150 yards a game (on approx. 15 attempts per game). He attended the 2004 U-M summer camp. He was the #3 quarterback at this spring's Iowa Elite 11 tryout (behind Rob Schoenhoft, who made the Elite 11, and Evan Sharpley).

RUNNING BACKS

With Grady and Simpson committed, the 04/05 RB need is filled.

- Commitment #1: Kevin Grady ('02 U-M Camper, 5-9, 230 lbs., 4.5 in the 40, 2.7 GPA) from East Grand Rapids, Mich. For his senior season he ran for 2,365 yards on 298 carries (7.9 yards per carry), and set state records in career scoring (924 points), career TD's (151), career rushing (8,431 yards) and consecutive 100 yard games (24). He committed Sept 8, 2003, after attending the Houston game. He was not at the 2004 U-M Camp because he was in summer school getting ahead -- he is enrolling at U-M in Jan. 2005 ... he'll attend the '05 Rose Bowl with the team. He is TheInsiders' #19 prospect.

- And Michigan picked up a fullback Commitment (Commit #7) from camp: Fullback Mister Simpson (5-9, 220 lbs., 4.5 in the 40 ... Nike stats: 31 bench press reps, 35.8 inch vertical jump) from Cincinnati Colerain. As a junior he gained 1,640 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was offered at camp and committed. Simpson grew up in Southfield, Mich.

WIDE RECEIVERS

With two commitments in the class, we assume that U-M is only strongly after one additional WR/ATH.

- Commitment #3: Mario Manningham (Dec. 10 official visit, 6-0, 180 lbs., 4.4 in the 40) from Warren, Ohio, Harding. Mario is growing and developing physically ... he's an inch taller at 6-0 now, and he's also noticeably stronger. He reportedly ran the camp's second fastest 40 time. Manningham made an unofficial visit to Michigan for the '03 Indiana game, and committed to the Wolverines the day after Signing Day. As a junior he made 32 receptions, for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. He is TheInsiders' #84 prospect.

- Commitment #4: Laterryal Savoy ('04 U-M Camp visitor, Nike stats: 6-2 1/2, 196 lbs., 4.59 in the 40, 4.18 sec. shuttle, 37 inch vertical jump ... 300 lb. bench press, 2.5 GPA/14 ACT) from Mamou, La. As a junior he nabbed 44 passes for 783 yards and nine touchdowns. He attended the U-M summer camp and solidified his commitment.

- Possible recruit: Wide Receiver Selwyn Lymon (6-4, 190 lbs., 4.4 in the 40, 15 ACT/770 SAT) from Ft. Wayne, Ind., Harding. He has set no visits yet because of basketball. He lists Purdue (the fav?), Ohio State, Penn State (the top 3?), followed by Michigan and Wisconsin. Depending on how the recruiting season goes, he could become a 'hot' U-M recruit at some point. For his senior season he had with 16 receptions for 353 yards receiving and four touchdowns; midway through the season he was switched to quarterback where he threw for 1,022 yards and 11 touchdowns.

TIGHT ENDS

With the commitment of Carson Butler, it can be assumed that U-M's tight end need is filled ... meaning some well-known recruits will no longer be at the top of the list.

- Commitment #11: Tight end/defensive end Carson Butler (Dec. 10 official visit, 6-5, 235 lbs., 4.6 in the 40, 2.9 GPA) from Detroit Renaissance. He made a U-M unofficial visit for the Minn. game, and for the Miami game. Butler had to sit out his junior year after transferring from Lansing Waverly. He did play hoops on the Renaisssance team last winter. U-M offered him after seeing film of his first couple games ... and he committed at the Minn. game.
