Basketball Recruiting Primer (Class of 2006)

The web's orginal and most complete basketball best guess list.

Check inside for detailed detailed roster projections, recruiting profiles for each prospect, and links to all GBW stories on the listed players.

*Note: The primer had to be separated by year do to space limitations. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

***(12/16/04 Changes)*** The links have been updated for Deshawn Sims, K'len Morris, Daequan Cook, David Lighty, Matthew Shaw, Tory Jackson, Scott Reynolds, and Tom Herzog. New players on the list are Marcus Johnson, and Larry Wright. The recruiting profile info has been updated almost all of the aforementioned players.

Format Change
One significant change to the list is the addition of the "target level" and "interest" indexes to each profile. Target level refers to our OPINION on where each respective player stands on the current recruiting list based on all of the information gathered up to this point. Interest refers to the how strongly each respective player is considering the Wolverines at this point in time. Each category is rated on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high).

5 - Interest couldn't be any stronger
4 - Very strong interest. Only a matter of time before they're 5's
3 - Interested with the potential to move up with more familiarity and evaluation
2 - Limited interest
1 - Low interest

The list is ordered first by Target Level and then sub-ordered by Interest level. These ratings can change from update to update, so keep an eye on them!

This list will be updated regularly as new players are discovered and players already listed make their decisions. The link to the Primer will reside permanently on the left NAV bar under the Best Guess Recruiting Class section.

Ultra versatile wing player that can play three positions on the basketball court (1,2, and 3). Plays with edge and catches opponents by surprise with his athleticism. His perimeter shot has improved a great deal and is threat to light it up from deep in any game. We mentioned in previous primer reports that we expected him to have a breakout summer and he has done just that. Exploded up the charts with an impressive summer campaign (much like Sims). His showing at the Adidas camp may have been the performance that cemented him as a top target on the Wolverines list.

Deshawn is a face-up post player with range out to the three-point line. He can take big men off of the dribble, but must work to improve his game with his back to the basket. As he displays a willingness to bang around more down low he'll become more and more dangerous. It seems as if that message has been passed along. He displayed tremendous improvement in that area this summer. His AAU performances garnered a lot praise and he is one of the hotter prospects on the circuit. That carried over to an AWESOME showing at the Nike All-American camp in Indianapolis. By the fall he had catapulted himself to the top player in the state of Michigan and one of the top 25 in the country. The Wolverines have taken notice and "Petey" has become a HUGE priority.

Tory Jackson was on fire at the Spiece Run N Slam tournament in May. The Saginaw product is a clutch player with shooting range that extends beyond the three-point line. He can get his shot off standing still or off the dribble. In addition, he has the ball on a string. Probably more of a scorer than passer at this point, but he has the raw skill set to be a very effective floor general at the next level. Can rise and dunk. Led Saginaw BV to Class C State title last year and did big things with the 17-and-under Michigan Hurricanes squad during the summer. The top PG in the state and one of the top PGs in the country. He grew up a Michigan fan and has already been offered by Michigan State. He named the Wolverines his favorite recently with Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, and Oklahoma all in contention.

Scott is a tremendous outside shooter that can explode for thirty point perfromances at anytime thanks to his accuracy beyond the arc. Definitely one of the top shooters in his class. His play at the Boo Williams Invitational tourney in early April garnered an all-tourney selection and served notice that he'll be one of the top floor leaders in his class. The Wolverines are amongst the early favorites. He visited Ann Arbor in the fall and this could be a Michigan, Oklahoma, North Carolina State battle.

Matt is very skilled offensively and is considered one of the to shooting big men in his class. He has expressed a desire to get off of the West Coast, and Michigan has definitely made their interest knows. Coach Charles Ramsey has been in his school and the amount of attention being paid him by the Wolverines isn't lost on Matt. He noted recently that Michigan had been, "showing me a whole lot of love and support." He's currently rated a 3 star prospect by The InsidersHoops.com and the #2 player in California by Hoop Scoop. Michigan was reportedly in his school again on December 8th.

Cook was one of the summer's top performers. After leading his high school team to the state semifinals, he teamed with Mike Conley and Greg Oden on Spiece Indy Heat to form one of the power teams on the summer circuit. Despite teaming with the two stars (whom already have chemistry because they play on the same high school squad), Daequan didn't have any trouble turning heads in his direction. Great form on his jump shot and is capable of going on long hot streaks from behind the arc. A scoring machine that can face up, post, pull-up, and dunk on and over opponents. Physically overpowers many guards he goes against. He is without question one of the top players (regardless of position) in the country, and considered by most to be the top wing guard in America. He was the top wing we watched during the summer REGARDLESS of class. Michigan has shown a great deal of interest in the Ohio product and the Wolverines moved up his list with an impressive unofficial visit to Ann Arbor in the summer. Grew up a North Carolina fan and they could be hard to beat now that they've offered. He has also expressed an interest in attending the same school as Mike Conley. Still, the Wolverines have a very good shot.

Big time athlete with both perimeter and to-the-basket skills. Graceful on the court and is a good shooter, but must continue to improve his already good off-of-the-dribble game to take his play to the next level. Ranked in the top 2 in his Ohio class IN FOOTBALL! Played receiver and runs a 4.58 forty. Unfortunately for those fans of the gridiron, GBW had heard from good sources that Lighty planned to give up the pigskin this season to concentrate solely on basketball. David later told us that he's still considering playing football next year, but it still doesn't look very likely. He will undoubtedly be in the running for the state's top hoopster and may have to fight off another Michigan target, Daequan Cook, to claim that title. By the way, most consider him a HUGE Michigan fan.

From theinsiders.com: "A gifted young post, Stepheson has a chance to be among the top power forwards in his class. With a great frame, and long arms, he looks like he'll add weight and strength easily. He's got a nice touch to about 12-15 feet, with the ability to play inside or away from the basket."

Scout.com's #1 power forward in the class of 2006. Long post player with inside/outside skills. Can drain the jumper out to 18-feet, put the ball on the floor very well, and is extremely active down low. Despite his size, he is one of the best rebounders in the country. Michigan has already ventured down to Maryland to see him in action and assistant Coach Chuck Swenson was seen watching him closely at the Charlie Weber tourney. Needs to get stronger and improve his back to the basket game. Ranked a 5 star prospect by scouthoops.com. Another jet quick PG on Michigan's 2006 checklist. He started the summer with outstanding performances at both the Boo Williams and Charlie Weber tournaments. He pairs an excellent jumpshot with outstanding dribbling skills. Any team that decides to go full court press against him just opens themselves up for a fast break opportunity. His floor game is excellent and he doesn't force anything on the court. One of the best pure points in the class. Favors the ACC schools at this point, but has started to list Michigan as of late.

At the Nike Hoop Jamboree this summer, Scout.com's national basketball analyst Dave Telep called Johnson, "the most explosive player at the camp." Other pundits in attendance offered similar commentary. The explosive guard brought his game to Ann Arbor last month and, as was reported in our Sept 26th open gym report, wowed players and onlookers with his athletic basket attacks. The one question mark about Johnson's game is his jumpshot. Many scouts suggest that he's a consistent jumper away from being one of the top twenty players in his class. "Marcus is a combo guard," said St. Vincent/St. Mary's Coach Dru Joyce. "He can handle both positions. I use him to push the ball. He does need to get better shooting the jumprer. He has been working hard on that and it's really improving. He's a very explosive scorer. He elevates so high and so quick that he's always able to get to the basket. He'll probably to be able to play both spots in college. Marcus didn't play a lot this summer because he had a foot fracture. He didn't get a chance to showcase his skills like some of these other guys. As far as the state of Ohio goes, the only player that has consistently shown better than Marcus is Daequan Cook. David Lighty is a great player, but he only plays great sometimes."

Newcomer to the instate scene that has made a splash since transferring in from Louisiana. Coach Lou Dawkins feels that his new star will challenge for Mr. Basketball in his senior year. "He reminds me of guy that used to play for the Indiana Hoosiers named Jay Edwards," Dawkins said. He has an in-between jumpshot, which is something that's missing from today's basketball players. He can also shoot it from 25 feet with ease. He's very very athletic and explosive. He has a 30-35 inch vertical. He can take you off the dribble or stop and pop. He can basically do it all. He's a great rebounder. He can pass. He can just do a lot, so I've had a number of colleges up here to see him.

Another of 3 sophomores invited to the Nike All-American Camp last year. Good face up range and can definitely bang down low. Some have mentioned him as an immediate jump (to the NBA) candidate, but he still mentions college as a possible destination once his prep career is over. David isn't flashy, but he can shoot, is tough, strong, and can defend. He is one of those gritty players that does whatever it takes to help a team win, but doesn't get the credit he deserves at the end of the night. Kool is a physical guard that uses his build to his advantage both offensively (getting into the lane and drawing contact) and defensively (bodying up his opponent).
