Michigan Rose Bowl Notes

Some Michigan football stats, streaks and situations going into the 2005 Rose Bowl: the team, Braylon Edwards, Mike Hart, Chad Henne.
The Wolverines now own the nation's longest consecutive bowl streak with Nebraska missing a bowl this year thus ending it's streak of 35 years. U-M's streak began in 1975 and the 2005 Rose Bowl will mark it's 30th straight bowl appearance. Michigan will also be playing its 9th straight January bowl. The Wolverines currently have the 2nd longest active January bowl streak next to Florida State (13). Michigan's current January streak is also the 5th longest in NCAA history.

Michigan also holds the longest active streak of AP poll appearances at 107 polls. 2nd place is Miami (FL) with 87 polls in a row. The Wolverines have gone into all but four games ranked in Lloyd Carr's career as head coach.

Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr is 14-4 against AP top 10 ranked teams (Texas #5) and is 7-2 against AP top five teams (Ohio State 4-2, Colorado, 2-0, Penn State 3-0, USC 0-1, Tennessee 0-1, MSU 1-0, Purdue 1-0, Alabama 1-0, Washington State 1-0, Wisconsin, 1-0).

Texas will become the 135th different opponent Michigan has faced in its 125 year history. Michigan is 109-21-4 in first time match-ups. Michigan is 7-5 in first time meetings at bowl games.

A win in the Rose Bowl would give Michigan it's 25th 10+ win season, which would tie Oklahoma (25) for 2nd all time next to Alabama (27).

With Michigan's 9-2 season, it extended its lead in all time wins (842) and took over the lead in all time winning percentage from Notre Dame. Michigan now sits at .74653% with the Irish at .74412%

Michigan set yet another attendance season attendance record as 666,149 fans watched Michigan in it's six home games for a record average of 111,025 surpassing the previous record of 111,008 set in 1999. Over 1 million fans were attendance for Michigan's 11 games in 2004, the 21st straight year over a million people have attended a Michigan football game in one season.

David Underwood is the lone Wolverine from the state of Texas (Madisonville).

Braylon Edwards needs two touchdowns in the Rose Bowl to pass Anthony Carter for 1st place in all time receiving TD's. Carter finished with 37 career scores while Braylon currently has 36.

Running back Mike Hart is listed 11th on Michigan's season rushing yards list with 1,372 yards this season. 16 yards will put Hart into the top 10 passing Lawrence Ricks and Gordon Bell. 88 yards will put past Butch Woolfolk for 6th and 98 yards will make him 5th ahead of Rob Lytle. 4th place is Chris Perry with 1,674 yards in 2003.

Mike Hart has fumbled only once in his career at Michigan (in the Iowa game) on 261 carries, and has gone 209 carries without a cough up.

Chad Henne needs 121 yards passing in the Rose Bowl to take over Tom Brady for 4th place on the all time season passing yardage list. Over 214 yards would give Henne the 3rd best season over Jim Harbaugh, but he would need 390 to pass John Navarre for 2nd and 815 (sounds easy enough doesn't it?) to pass Navarre for first.

Chad Henne will be the first true freshman quarterback ever to start in the Rose Bowl and only the 2nd true freshman signal caller to start in a BCS Bowl (Matt LoVecchio-Notre Dame in 2000).
