US Army: GBW East Practice Interviews: UM Recruits
James, are you going to announce your decision at the game?
"I'm not going to announce here."
Are you still visiting Oklahoma next weekend?
"No. Oklahoma hasn't talked to me lately. So I might take a visit to Florida, and it could be the weekend after next (which would make it down to U-M, Nebraska and Florida for him)."
On what position he is playing.
"I'm playing defensive end in the game."
We asked him about Marques Slocum.
"Marques? He's my BOY. We made our official visit together."
Scouting report on McKinney. He looks fast as a defensive end, but at 6-2, 260 he was kind've dwarfed out there by an East OL of Dan Doering and Dace Richardson at guards, and even they were dwarfed by Chris Scott and Alex Boone at tackles.
Defensive/offensive tackle Marques Slocum (Dec. 10 U-M official visit, PSU Nike stats: 6-6, 330 lbs., 5.09 in the 40 ... 300 lb. bench press) from Philadelphia West Catholic.
On if he is announcing at the game (because there are 'open slots' to announce if he wants to).
"I'm going to go home and make my announcement (between Michigan and Michigan State)."
On playing the O-line in the game (he's not at offfensive center, he's at guard).
"It was okay. But I'm most comfortable at the defensive line."
We asked him about James McKinney.
"James? He's my BOY."
Scouting report on Slocum: as an OL, Slocum has a lot to learn ... he was not that comfortable in the OL drills ... still, the natural talent oozes from him.
He did NOT have to play center, since Michael Oher (from Tennessee) is fixed at that spot ...
After the East practice, McKinney and Slocum were walking in together and teasing each other. McKinney on Slocum (as Don Hoekwater was taking Slocum's photo, while Slocum was string a 'warrior pose'): "He's so SERIOUS, so MEAN!"
Slocum, grinning, "What does McKinney know .. he's from Luoise-ville, from Lua-vul."
Punter Zoltan Mesko (6-4, 210 lbs,) from Twinsburg, Ohio. He's just a hair under 6-4 tall, and easily 210 lbs.
"I was a soccer player ... I was the top scorer 7th, 8th, 9th grade year so the football coach asked me to kick field goals. From there I moved to punter."
"I almost have the Michigan fight song memorized (in his slight Eastern European accent it's very cute ...)."
Scouting report on Mesko: WOW. Boomed one skying 50 yarder after another ... with a college 'quick no-step' motion. He reminds us of a stronger/stronger-legged Adam Finley ... this kid could punt on Sundays IMO.
