GBW's Thu. Army Talks: PK Waldron; Mesko; McKinney

Place Kicker Matthew Waldron had something intriguing to say about Michigan.

Zoltan Mesko enters the U.S. Army Week contests, and wins one! James McKinney battles a nagging injury.
Place Kicker Matthew Waldron (5-9, 180 lbs.) from Oakfield, New York, Oakfield-Alabama. As we mentioned before, Waldron attended the Michigan Kicking Camp this summer where he was the top place kicker, and where he and punter (and Michigan commitment) Zoltan Mesko became friends. Waldron does not current;y have any Division One offers, and today (Thurs.) he told us: "If I don't get a scholarship offer from a Division One school, I'm going to walk on at Michigan. They told me that if I walked on for two years, I'd get a scholarship once Garret Rivas leaves. And, hey! If nothing else I'll end up with a great degree!" Waldron was 8-10 in field goals for the seasons, with a long of 42 yards.

Michigan punter commitment Zoltan Mesko practices his craft during Thursday's East workout.
Speaking of Zoltan Mesko, the young man is really enjoying the week, perhaps more than anyone else. He even joined in the passing contest this afternoon (and did surprisingly well, getting more points than Jake Christensen!). And the unpretentious Mesko won another contest too, as he told us: "I won the chicken eating contest last night ... I ate 15 drumsticks in six minutes ... I almost threw up twice."

James McKinney during Thursday's East practice. McKinney said he has a hip-flexor injury but will play in Saturday's game.

Michigan recruit DE/TE James McKinney (Dec. 10 U-M official visit, '04 U-M Camper, US Army Combine stats: 6-1 1/2, 274 lbs., 5.10 in the 40, 14 bench press reps., 24 1/2 inch vertical jump, 2.7 GPA/17 ACT, from Louisville, Kent., Central) was limping around on Wednesday, and was held out of most of the chilly morning practice. McKinney, who had been a starter at defensive end, told us, "I injured my hip, it's a hip flexor strain. I'll play in the game I'm pretty sure, but there is no use of injuring it more for an All-Star Game." But lest you may think James is losing any enthusiasm for the game, he added, "They've got me playing some tight end too now, did you notice? In goal line situations."

As far as another visit, McKinney told us, "I might visit Florida because Coach (Greg) Mattison has gone there (from Notre Dame). If I do I think it'll be next weekend, the 21st."
