"Well, the first reason why I committed to Michigan was to get this whole recruitment process over with," says Slocum, from West Philadelphia Catholic.
"I also just figured that they were the best program for me out of the two schools. It felt like Michigan was more of a program.
"I also think that coaches (Lloyd) Carr and (Bill) Sheridan (defensive line) can really get the best out of me, and they're really going to take care of me, my concerns and my family's.
"This is a 100% commitment for me and I will not take any other official visits.
"When I announced my commitment to coach Carr, he said that he was the happiest coach in the 'US of A'.
"I like how I'm going to have the opportunity to go in there as a freshman and get a chance at some early playing time. If I go in there with the mentality to lift, run and workout I know that I can accomplish that.
"A lot of people were talking about their depth charts and stuff, but the chance to play as a freshman is what also really turns me on about them.
"I can also learn a lot more concerning my major at Michigan. I plan on majoring in computer animation and at Michigan I can learn over 15 ways of producing art.
"In my first two years at Michigan I can learn photography, painting, bronzing, sewing, claymation, printing, wood and metal among some others…and Michigan State did not offer these kind of qualities.
"I think my coach has notified the coaches at Michigan State. I'm pretty sure they're mad because they didn't get me or Derrell (Hand) (DT--committed to Notre Dame).
"I think they might still be on me, but I'm not sure what they're going to do. I'd anticipate they will, and if they do, well I'll just tell them what I told you.
"Football at Michigan is great. I wanted to go to a school and compete for a national championship. And the fact that I'll be playing in front of 108,000 people, on national television, and competing for a BCS championship title, that's just something that I wanted to do, and be a part of.
"During the Army All-American game (sponsored by Scout.com), I was talking with Eugene Monroe (Scout.com's #1 OL/5 stars--committed to Virginia) and the schools he had as his favorites. I was about to give Virginia and North Carolina a chance, but I felt comfortable with my top two.
"Plus Michigan has had the edge from the get go. I've always liked them even since I was young.
"I love it and I can't wait to be a Wolverine! They've recruited me to play defense. They are low on defensive linemen. I don't like offense. I don't like blocking. I like hitting people and tackling. But I'm not a short Warren Sapp-type. I'm big. I'm 6-5 and I'm fast and I'll play the three-technique, where I line up outside of the (offensive) guard's eye.
"Of the 35 schools which recruited me, they all recruited me for defense, except about four. I can only remember that of the big schools, Oklahoma and Tennessee talked with me about offense. But I'm playing defense."
