James McKinney Back From Florida

One of the final targets for Michigan this recruiting season is defensive lineman James McKinney of Louisville, Ky., Central High School.

The four-star standout has returned from Florida, his final official visit, and is ready to get down to the business of making his choice.

Has the Florida visit changed things for McKinney?
It's well known that Louisville, Ky., defensive star James McKinney was once an early Michigan commitment. After prodding from his family he decided the decision to pledge was too early, and that he wanted to look around. This weekend finished his "looking around" as he took his fifth and final visit to the University of Florida. The Gators came late into the McKinney sweepstakes, but were able to get in with the talented McKinney when Greg Mattison, who was recruiting him at Notre Dame, took a job with the Gators.

So, how did the Florida visit go? GoBlueWolverine caught up with James yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

"I actually had a pretty good time down there," McKinney said. "I got to talk a lot to Coach Mattison. And The Swamp was really impressive -- we went there Saturday night, and they had all the lights on; it was really nice."

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound McKinney said his host was Tony Joiner who was able to show him around Gainseville. "I really didn't have any expectations going into the visit," he said. "But I really had a good time and thought Florida was a great place."

With all his official visits completed, it is now decision time. "I'd say my top two schools are Michigan and Clemson. I'm not going to name a leader but those two are on top. I need to sit down with my mom and (family) and decide what's best for me."

As far as his timetable, he told us, "I'm ready to get this over with; I don't want to wait until Signing Day." McKinney had stated previously that he may announce at his school football banquet Jan. 30 ... as far as that goes, he said, "I still may do it then, I'll just have to talk it over with my family and see what I'm going to do."

The big man said Florida would be down sometime in the next week for an in-home. "There might be one more school come in here too, but I can't remember which one," he said.

As for his plans for the spring: "I might do some track," McKinney said. "But I think I'm just going to work out and get ready for football."

Editors Note: McKinney and Michigan's most recent commitment, Marques Slocum, became friends when they took their official U-M visits together the Dec. 10 weekend. Their friendship was further cemented during U.S. Army week, when Slocum got himself moved from OL over to the D-Line and played next to McKinney (who played all DL positions in the game). Will their friendship get to continue for 4-5 more years in Ann Arbor?
