Slocum Teammate WR/DB John Maddox Wide Open

Michigan fans will recognize Philadelphia West Catholic High School as the home of recent signee Marques Slocum. It is also the home of one of the top wide-receivers in the nation, John Maddox.

GoBlueWolverine Magazine spoke Tuesday with Maddox who says he just received his first written offer. Will he follow his teammate to Ann Arbor?
Wide receiver John Maddox of West Catholic High School in Philadelphia reports 11 schools have given him assurances they will offer. One has finally come through. "I received my first written offer in the mail (Tuesday), it was from Penn State," he said. "Rutgers, Tennessee, Syracuse, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Miami and some others all say they are going to send me offers soon."

Maddox said he grew up a Notre Dame fan, but is remaining open during his recruiting. "I really wouldn't say I have a top five right now," he said. "Some of my teammates and friends are pushing me to go to the schools they picked. Marques wants me to go to Michigan, Derrell (Hand) wants me to go to Notre Dame, Curtis Brinkley wants me to join him at Syracuse." Maddox's teammate defensive lineman Marques Slocum recently signed with Michigan.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Maddox said that while he plays wide receiver and defensive back, he sees his future in college as a wide receiver. West Catholic is primarily a running team, so Maddoz hasn't been able to shine -- reporting 23 catches for 505-yards as a junior. "I had 51 tackles and 10 interceptions on defense," he said. "My sophomore year I had 40 catches for 717-yards."

Maddox said he attended the Penn State camp as a freshman, and made a Midwest swing last summer with his coach and teammates. "My coach, Marques, Derrell and I went to Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Iowa," he said. "We did all that in a week, it was pretty fun and it was nice to see all the schools. We couldn't meet any of the coaches because of the rules." He said he would attend camps this summer if he could get rides to the events. However, he did make it down to San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Junior Combine, where he reports a 4.5 in the 40. "It was amazing, there were a lot of people there," he said.

He said playing time and academics would be a major factor in his decision, and that he will take all five of his official visits before making his decision. "I really haven't thought much about his yet," he said.

Note: GoBlueWolverine watched spoke to and watched Maddox at the U.S. Army Combine, because Slocum made sure we were on the lookout for him! He measured 6-1 3/4 and 164 pounds at the combine and showed very good speed and agility as a wideout (although he told us at the combine that he'd be open to playing either WR or DB in college) -- he will definitely be a top national prospect this year.
