Jr. Day Follow-up: If Signing Day Were Today: OFF.

First off: there are eleven scholarships available at this moment for the 2005-06 recruiting class.

Secondly, we see the kids who made it in for Junior Day Sunday, plus who got offered, etc.

So, IF Signing Day WERE today, what would the class look like?

First off, OFFENSE

It's not just an academic exercise; probably 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the class will come from this group of kids.

Included are comments on Jr. Day visitors.
Before we start, the caveat of course is, it is NOT Signing Day, no where close. It is really June 20 (or whenever the end of camp is) that we really can identify 3/4ths of the recruiting class. And U-M's recruiting goes more 'national' during the spring evaluation period. But, our coverage of recruiting progresses every year -- and it is earlier and earlier that we can identify the serious targets. Here is how things look today.

Need: it can be assumed that U-M will sign one, and hopefully a top one.
Outlook: this position is perhaps the least developed for U-M in terms of honing in on 'the kid'.

The early offers:

- Tim Tebow QB 6'3 225 4.61 Jacksonville Nease Florida. Jim S' #1 quarterback prospect. As a junior Tebow passed for 4,286 yards and 46 TDs while throwing only six interceptions. He added another 1,266 yards for 24 touchdowns on the ground, accounting for a total of 70 touchdowns as a junior. His parents are Florida grads.

- Neil Caudle QB 6'3 192 4.60 Hoover Spain Park Alabama. He is only Jim S' #10 QB but has an early U-M offer. In just 8 games as a junior (an injury cut short the season) he completed 129-of-200 passes (65%) for 1,624 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 424 yards and four touchdowns on 43 carries. He grew up a big Auburn fan.
v Perhaps the 'close to an offer' group:

Lists U-M as his fav: Zach Frazer QB 6'4 209 4.80 Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. As a junior, Frazer completed 285-of-441 passes for 3,674 yards and 27 touchdowns with only nine interceptions. He has been up to Ann Arbor for at least one game.

Matthew Stafford QB 6'3 212 4.70 Dallas Highland Park. Jim S' #2 QB. His parents are FSU grads.

Mitch Mustain QB 6'3 200 4,72 Springdale Arkansas. Jim S' #5 QB.

RUNNING BACK Need: not great with Hart, Grady and Martin as young backs on the team.
Outlook: U-M has offered the top 3 RB's in the country but has to be long shots for them (one, Chris Wells, already committed to OSU).

The early offers:

LeSean McCoy RB 5'10 200 4.30 Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt Pennsylvania. Jim S' #1 RB.

Knowshon Moreno RB 6'0 195 4.40 Middletown South New Jersey. Jim S' #2 RB.

Watch out for as time goes on.

Attended Junior Day and lists U-M as the fav: Javeare White RB/DB 5'9 180 4.50 Louisville Manual Kentucky. He is Jim S' #37 RB. He attended the U-M Junior Day and will likely camp as well (he camped in '04).

James Aldridge DB/RB 6'1 215 4.50 Merrillville Indiana. He is Jim S' #15 DB, but is primarily a running back in high school. U-M likes him and have offer (may already have offered). He went down with an ACL in the playoffs last season after running for 2,067 yards (7.3 yards per carry) and 20 TDs.

Need: not great with 6 frosh and shop WR's on the team.
Outlook: in the end watch out for someone who wants Michigan.

Watch out for as time goes on.

U-M the fav for: Menelik Holt WR 6'4 205 4,65 San Diego St. Augustine California. Menelik is from the same school as Jason Forcier. As a junior, Menelik Holt caught 44 passes for 780 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Need: 1

Attended Junior Day: TE/FB Luke Schmidt 6'4 230 4.70 Jasper Indiana. He is Jim S' #10 TE.

Joe Torchia TE 6'5 220 Bergenfield Queen of Peace New Jersey He is Jim S' #5 TE.

Need: 1 or 2
Outlook: 3 kids seem to have early offers, and there are 1-2 more prominent kids who want U-M.

The early offers:

Offered at Junior Day: Justin Boren OL 6'2 275 Pickerington North Ohio. Jim S' #10 OL. Justin isn't huge (note the height/weight we give him) but had a huge junior season. His dad played for U-M (LB Mike, circa 1980-82). U-M VS. OSU battle.

Attended Junior Day: Connor Smith OL 6'4 280 Cincinnati Colerain Ohio. Jim S' #24 OL. Smith is not quite the 6-5 he's been listed at. Colerain has been good to U-M, but Smith's dad played for OSU, so this one will be tough for U-M.

Sam Young OL 6'7 295 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas Florida. Jim S' #11 OL. Looks like a U-M-Miami-Notre Dame battle for Florida's top OL. Former Wolverine Jon Shaw attended St. Thomas Aquinas.

Watch out for as time goes on.

John Romero OL/DL 6'5 280 Tucson Salpointe Catholic. Jim S' #22 OL grew up a U-M fan.
Stay tuned for defense,
