Det. King Churns Out Another Top Prospect: Herring

GBW got a phone call from the latest in a long line of high level players to come out of Detroit King. Linebacker/Defensive end Jerrell Herring filled us in on how his season went, his camping plans, and where his recruitment stands at this point.

Michigan picked up its first commitment for the class of 2006 when Detroit Crockett's Brandon Graham decided to become a Wolverine. He, however, is not the only linebacker prospect in the Motor City. Just a few miles up I-75, another imposing force mans the middle for Detroit King. Jerrell Herring (6-1, 245, 4.9) established himself as one of the top players in the public school league last year. He has received early Michigan interest and the Wolverines are definitely on his list.

How did last season go for you?

"I had about 110 tackles, three interceptions, 12 sacks, three fumble recoveries with one for a touchdown, and three forced fumbles. We were 8-3."

Have you been to any schools for camps or unofficial visits?

"I've gone to the Michigan camp the past two years. It was a real good experience with the coaches up there. I worked out with the inside linebackers."

Have you been to any others?

Do you have a favorite at this point?

"I have a top three. Michigan, Ohio State, and West Virginia. I haven't heard from West Virginia yet though."

What about Michigan State?

"I just heard from them. They sent me something in the mail about their summer camp. I'll probably go to that."

Will you camp anywhere else?

"I just got invited to the Nike camp, so I'll be going there. I'll also camp again at Michigan and Ohio State."

Have you gotten a chance to talk to Ernest Shazor about Michigan?

"Yes I have. Ernest came by a couple of practices last year. He told me that Michigan was the place to be."

What will be the most significant factors in your decision?

"Graduation rate and playing time."

Do you have a position preference?

"I want to play linebacker. I'm really good against the run."

Is that where Michigan is recruiting you?

Would you be opposed to playing defensive end in college?

"I love the linebacker position, but if a school needs me at defensive end I'd play it."

When do you want to have your decision made?

"I want to have it made before my season starts."

What do you want to major in?

"Physical education."

GBW will follow up with Jerrell in the coming weeks. We'll see if he earns scholarship offers at this summer's camps. He is Jim S' #9 LB.
