Numeric position rankings are by Jim S, as are his 'star' ratings of U-M's chances (**** being tops).
Big need #1: Defensive Backs. We assumer U-M will try to sign 3, either 2 CB's and a safety or visa versa.
One top recruit lists U-M as leader: 15 Darrin Walls DB 6'1 185 4.37 Pittsburgh Woodland Hills, Pennsylvania. From the same program as Steve Breaston and Ryan Mundy. Michigan -- his early favorite -- has offered. He'll camp at U-M, will he be the first Woodland Hills kid ever to commit before the season?****
Assuming U-M would like 2 CB's, who might be #2? Here are 2 kids who are camping, and so have their chance to impress:
DB/WR Kim Royston 5'11 180 4.50 St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall, Minnesota. Offers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. He went to great lengths to visit Michigan for Junior Day but didn't get a good feel for the school due to the weather-related travel delays. U-M just offered his teammate, OL Matt Carufel.***
DB/WR Brandon Caleb 6'1 192 4.50 Fork Union Military Academy, Virginia. He is being recruited as both a WR and DB. As a junior he caught 15 passes for 485 yards and six touchdowns. He camped at Michigan last summer -- as a WR -- and plans on returning this year. Will he work out at CB this time? No offers yet. ***
Name to watch (the second kid U-M would REALLY like?): top DB/RB who has a U-M offer: A.J. Wallace 6'1 195 4.37 8 Pomfret McDonough, Maryland. ***
No sure thing here, but assuming U-M wants one or two:
1 Myron Rolle DB/LB 6'2 210 4.53 Princeton The Hun School, New Jersey. Will enroll in college in January, 2006. Michigan VERY heavily involved with this 4.0 student. He will make his visits in the spring/summer. There are semi-high hopes here, but watch Miami, his dad's alma mater.****
5 Taylor Mays DB 6'3 210 4.40 Seattle O'Dea, Washington. Michigan has offered and is very heavily involved, but USC has offered now (along with many others of course) ... will U-M get him away from the West Coast? ****
11 James Aldridge DB/RB 6'1 215 4.50 Merrillville, Indiana. As a RB he gained 2,067 yards. He has many offers -- Michigan was his childhood fave but may be holding back on offering since he suffered an ACL at the end of the season. ****
BOTTOM LINE -- if Signing Day were today: things look good for Walls. Rolle would be an amazing pick-up at a sorely needed spot.
