Basketball Recruiting Primer - Class of 2006

The web's orginal and most complete basketball best guess list. Check inside for detailed detailed roster projections, recruiting profiles for each prospect, and links to all GBW stories on the listed players.

***(4/29/05 Changes)*** The links have been updated for Deshawn Sims, K'len Morris, Tory Jackson, Matthew Shaw, Kurtis Huelsman, and Tom Herzog. The recruiting profile info has been updated almost all of the aforementioned players. Stay tuned for additions to this list that will be made in the next week or so.

Format Change
One significant change to the list is the addition of the "target level" and "interest" indexes to each profile. Target level refers to our OPINION on where each respective player stands on the current recruiting list based on all of the information gathered up to this point. Interest refers to the how strongly each respective player is considering the Wolverines at this point in time. Each category is rated on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high).

5 - Interest couldn't be any stronger
4 - Very strong interest. Only a matter of time before they're 5's
3 - Interested with the potential to move up with more familiarity and evaluation
2 - Limited interest
1 - Low interest

The list is ordered first by Target Level and then sub-ordered by Interest level. These ratings can change from update to update, so keep an eye on them!

This list will be updated regularly as new players are discovered and players already listed make their decisions. The link to the Primer will reside permanently on the left NAV bar under the Best Guess Recruiting Class section.

Ultra versatile wing player that can play three positions on the basketball court (1,2, and 3). Plays with edge and catches opponents by surprise with his athleticism. His perimeter shot has improved a great deal and is threat to light it up from deep in any game. We mentioned in previous primer reports that we expected him to have a breakout summer and he has done just that. Exploded up the charts with an impressive summer campaign (much like Sims). His showing at the Adidas camp may have been the performance that cemented him as a top target on the Wolverines list. Junior year recognition: Detroit News 2nd team All-State (Class A). Detroit Free Press 3rd team All-State (Class A). Selected for the 2005 NBA Players Association Top 100 camp.

Deshawn is a face-up post player with range out to the three-point line. He can take big men off of the dribble, but must work to improve his game with his back to the basket. As he displays a willingness to bang around more down low he'll become more and more dangerous. It seems as if that message has been passed along. He displayed tremendous improvement in that area this summer. His AAU performances garnered a lot praise and he is one of the hotter prospects on the circuit. That carried over to an AWESOME showing at the Nike All-American camp in Indianapolis. By the fall he had catapulted himself to the top player in the state of Michigan and one of the top 25 in the country. The Wolverines have taken notice and "Petey" has become a HUGE priority. Averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds.while leading Pershing to the Regionals (where they lost to Romulus). Detroit News All-State Dream Team. Detroit Free Press 1st team All-State (Class A). Also considering Michigan State, Connecticut, Kentucky, Syracuse, and now Oregon. The Ducks have targeted he and good friend TaJuan Porter as a possible package deal. He will take visits this summer, but it will be a huge upset if he doesn't make a public commitment to the Wolverines.

Tory Jackson was on fire at the Spiece Run N Slam tournament in May. The Saginaw product is a clutch player with shooting range that extends beyond the three-point line. He can get his shot off standing still or off the dribble. In addition, he has the ball on a string. Probably more of a scorer than passer at this point, but he has the raw skill set to be a very effective floor general at the next level. Can rise and dunk. Led Saginaw BV to Class C State title as a sophomore and then did big things with the 17-and-under Michigan Hurricanes squad the following summer. Averaged 30 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals per game during his junior season. Look for Jackson to have a monster summer and move up even higher in the rankings Detroit News All-State Dream Team. Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team. The top PG in the state and one of the top PGs in the country. He grew up a Michigan fan and lists the Wolverines as his favorite followed by Florida, Miami, Illinois, and Kansas. Like Sims, Amaker visited Jackson's school in early April and it would be a huge shock if anyone other than Michigan received his commitment.

Shot blocking big man visited Michigan in early June (04) for an open gym and enjoyed his time in Ann Arbor. Made it back for many oen gyms visits over the summer and various games during the year. Towering prospect that runs the floor extremely well. Coordinated. Big time shot blocker. Has effective moves with his back to the basket. Must get bigger and stronger. Has been pushed around by players of equal or bigger size. Mostly potential at this point. His Powers club was shocked by Perry in the Regionals 57-54. Averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Detroit News 1st team All-State (Class B). Detroit Free Press 1st team All-State (Class B). Had an impressive turnament performance in Columbus Ohio to start the 05 AAU season...making the all-tourney team at the All-Ohio Nike Cup. Tommy Amaker visited him at his school in early April and the Wolverines look like the team to beat. Notre Dame and Michigan State are also receiving strong consideration.

Long post player with good inside-out ability. Underrated jump shooter. Compared to Wisconsin star Mike Wilkinson at the same stage of development. Averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game during his junior season. To date he has scholarship offers from Dayton, DePaul, Miami of Ohio, Cincinnati, Bowling Green. Michigan assistant Andrew Moore was in to see him in late April. He is one to keep an eye on this summer.

Matt is skilled offensively and is considered one of the top shooting big men in his class. He indcated that he needed to work on his defense and rebounding heading into his junior and really focused on that heading into his high school season. Also need to maitain conditioning. Shaw expressed a desire to get off of the West Coast early on, and Michigan definitely made its interest known. The amount of attention being paid him by the Wolverines isn't lost on Matt. The departure of assistant Coach Charles ramsey initially seemd to rattle him a bit, but an April visit to his high school by Tommy Amaker alleviated any concerns he had. Shaw averaged about 13 points and 10 boards after transferring from Verbum Dei to Fairfax. He recently took a visit to USC and the Trojans join Michigan, Georgia Tech, Illinois, and Boston College in his top five. A September visit to Ann Arbor is a distinct possibility.

Intriguing prospect that plays on both the wing and the post in high school. Good jump shooter from what we've wintessed but noted more for his ability to get to the basket by scouts. Needs to work on jump[er and his left hand to play on the wing effectively in college. Good athlete, but needs to add strength. UM assistant Andrew Moore visited his school in late April and the Wolverines look to be re-entering the fray for him after a long absence.

Visited Michigan back in December and Michigan returned the favor with a visit to Harvard Westlake during the eval period. The West Coast schools hold a comfortable lead right now, but that hasn't dulled Michigan's interest. Rated a 3 star player by scouthoops.com and the #31 player in California by Hoop Scoop. From theinsiders.com: "A gifted young post, Stepheson has a chance to be among the top power forwards in his class. With a great frame, and long arms, he looks like he'll add weight and strength easily. He's got a nice touch to about 12-15 feet, with the ability to play inside or away from the basket."

At the Nike Hoop Jamboree this summer, Scout.com's national basketball analyst Dave Telep called Johnson, "the most explosive player at the camp." Other pundits in attendance offered similar commentary. The explosive guard brought his game to Ann Arbor last month and, as was reported in our Sept 26th open gym report, wowed players and onlookers with his athletic basket attacks. The one question mark about Johnson's game is his jumpshot. Many scouts suggest that he's a consistent jumper away from being one of the top twenty players in his class. "Marcus is a combo guard," said St. Vincent/St. Mary's Coach Dru Joyce. "He can handle both positions. I use him to push the ball. He does need to get better shooting the jumprer. He has been working hard on that and it's really improving. He's a very explosive scorer. He elevates so high and so quick that he's always able to get to the basket. He'll probably to be able to play both spots in college. Marcus didn't play a lot this summer because he had a foot fracture. He didn't get a chance to showcase his skills like some of these other guys. As far as the state of Ohio goes, the only player that has consistently shown better than Marcus is Daequan Cook. David Lighty is a great player, but he only plays great sometimes."

Newcomer to the instate scene that has made a splash since transferring in from Louisiana. Coach Lou Dawkins feels that his new star will challenge for Mr. Basketball in his senior year. "He reminds me of guy that used to play for the Indiana Hoosiers named Jay Edwards," Dawkins said. He has an in-between jumpshot, which is something that's missing from today's basketball players. He can also shoot it from 25 feet with ease. He's very very athletic and explosive. He has a 30-35 inch vertical. He can take you off the dribble or stop and pop. He can basically do it all. He's a great rebounder. He can pass. He can just do a lot, so I've had a number of colleges up here to see him. Wright led the Trojans to the state semifinals where they lost to Romulus. David isn't flashy, but he can shoot, is tough, strong, and can defend. He is one of those gritty players that does whatever it takes to help a team win, but doesn't get the credit he deserves at the end of the night. Kool is a physical guard that uses his build to his advantage both offensively (getting into the lane and drawing contact) and defensively (bodying up his opponent). Those that favor style over substance won't like Kool's game, but those that know what it takes to build a winning team will want him on their squad. Led South Christian to the Class B state title as a junior, averaging 25 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals. Scored 37 points in the semifinal round and 43 in the finals...third highest in tournament history. Detroit News 1st team All-State (Class B). Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team.
