You hate to put comparisons on kids just finishing their sophomore year of high school, but it’s hard not to see some of the same traits in Lucas that have been prevalent with departing Wake Forest floor leader Chris Paul.
Both play with a sense of calm. Both can score when needed. Both make those around them better. Both usually rise to the occasion when the game is on the line.
``I’ve heard that comparison before,” Lucas said. “Chris Paul is a great player, so that’s a great compliment to me.”
Lucas averaged 20.2 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists this past season as a first-year starter at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, a prep school in Detroit.
He still needs to improve the consistency on his perimeter shot, but he is adept at pulling up from mid-range and also penetrating to the basket and either finishing or dishing off to teammates.
Lucas finished with 28 points and 5 assists in a semifinal victory in the under-16 bracket in Dallas this past weekend.
