Michigan Elite 11 Tryout: Top Names and Surprises

Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor was host Friday to 100 high school quarterbacks, all hoping to make the "Elite 11" Quarterback Camp -- as well as trying to impress the dozens of college coaches looking on. 16 well known signal-callers were in attendance, including Josh Freeman from Kansas City. But it was a relatively unknown from Minnesota who was the top performer.

First, the top unofficial visitor spotted at the tryout: OL Justin Boren (6-foot-3, 290-pounds) from Pickerington North High in the Columbus, Ohio suburbs. Boren was in attendance with his father -- former Wolverine Mike. Boren did not commit to Michigan during the visit.

For the Elite 11 Quarterback Tryout Camp, there were no 40-yard dashes, no vertical jumps, no bench presses -- it was just passing-passing-passing. Throwing drills of all kinds: drop backs and roll-outs; and passes of all kinds, long and short. Two hours of drills in all. And after about an hour a 'top group' was formed of about 20 kids. All in all, there was plenty of time to see all the QB's make many throws of all types.

Three GoBlueWolverine staffers were in attendance, TJB, Sam Webb and Mark Ouimet. Here are our consensus top performers of the evening (and a rough consensus of onlookers as well), in order.

Adam Weber
1. The top performer for the evening was a virtually unknown QB outside the state of Minnesota: Adam Weber from Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal caller made strong throws again and again all through the evening, the most consistently strong and accurate of all the QB's. GBW will have an interview with Weber (Jim S' No. 28 QB); for now we'll say he has a Minnesota scholarship offer so far. It is safe to assume his offer list will expand after his performance Friday evening (although we'd be somewhat surprised if he garnered a U-M offer right away).

Josh Freeman
2. Josh Freeman, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound slinger from Grandview, Mo. Freeman, Jim S' No. 11 QB, was the most raw-talented quarterback there, but his performance was inconsistant, with many throws sailing on him. As most recruiting fans know, Freeman has scholarship offers from Nebraska and Oklahoma, among others.

Mike Hartline
3. Mike Hartline, the 6-foot-6, 180-pound QB from Canton, Ohio GlenOak. Hartline, Jim S' No. 18 QB once again demonstrated a lot of ability and a very good arm. If he can gain weight and strength he can be a fine college quarterback. He is slight of build, however, so how much he will fill out is the question mark.

4. Kevin Smith (6-foot-2, 190-pounds) from Pennsylvania. As at the previous Saturday's PSU Nike, Smith made good throws again and again. Smith's dad told GBW that he is attracting a lot of MAC attention so far.

Justin Burke
5. Justin Burke, 6-foot-3 180-pounds, from Lexington Catholic Ky. Jim S' No. 14 QB has a pretty good arm and made good throws some of the time, but he seemed disappointed in his performance.

6. Isiah Williams from Chicago Vocational. The 6-foot-1 1/2, 200-pound 'athlete' told GBW he has QB offers from Iowa, Illinois and Purdue.

7. Will Fidler, 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, from Henderson County Ky. Jim S' No. 20 QB had a pretty consistant evening and showed a pretty good arm.

8. Rudy Kirbus. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, from Cleveland St. Ignatius Ohio , Jim S' No. 24 QB, had a so-so camp.

9. Miles Schlichter, 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, from Miami Trace, Ohio. Mobility is the forte of Jim S' No. 39 QB. He had his usual good mobility/okay arm performance.

Didn't make the top group:

James Lark
10. James Lark, 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, from St. George, Utah, Pine View. GBW was surprised not to see Lark make the top group -- he had a good arm and made many fine throws.

11. Mike Canfield. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound QB from Lansing, Mich, Everett had, frankly, a below par evening. Jim S' No. 15 QB looked noticably nervous under the strutiny of the U-M coaches in attendance.

(the final four kids are in no particualr order)

12. Sean Hakes, 6-foot-3 180-pounds from Fort Worth, Texas, Nolan Catholic. He is Jim S' No. 13 QB.

13. Josh Rouhan 6-foot-3, 210-pounds from Howard City, Mich, Tri-County. He is Jim S' No. 35 QB.

14. Matt Forystek, 6-foot-3, 205-pounds from Dearborn, Mich., Divine Child. He is Jim S' No. 52 QB.

15. Austen Arnaud, 6-foot-3 205-pounds, from Ames, Iowa. He is Jim S' No. 16 QB.

16. Shane Tierney 6-2, 190-pounds from Stevensville-Lakeshore Michigan. He is Jim S' No. 67 QB.

Also in attendance was huge instate lineman Bryant Nowicki (6-foot-7, 370-pounds) from Bangor, Mich., John Glenn.
