L.A. Scout.com Combine: Linebacker Travis Goethel

The Scout.com Combine at El Camino College saw some of the finest talent on the West Coast showing off their skills on a beautiful sunny Southern California Saturday. One such talent, linebacker Travis Goethel of Vista, Calif., High School, almost certainly increased his stock by turning in one of the top performances of the combine.

Linebacker Travis Goethel breaks up a pass attempt during one-on-one drills Saturday at the Scout.com Combine held at El Camino College in Redondo Beach, Calif. Goethel reports two offers.
Measuring 6-foot-2, 215-pounds, Goethel (pronounced GAY-thel) is solidly built and very lean. At the recent Nike Camp held at USC, he turned in a less-than-stellar time of 4.8 in the 40-yard dash. However, on this Saturday he blazed a 4.66, followed by a 4.74. Those in attendance took notice of the effort, and Goethel became one to watch.

During the one-on-one drills at the end of the day's activities, Goethel showed good footwork and mobility. His coverage skills were impressive as he kept running backs at bay for most of the event. For a big guy he has the ability to change direction well and adjust to the opposing player.

Geothel runs through agility drills during the combine. He said he would like to visit Michigan.

He has a mean-streak and is not afraid to mix things up -- quality traits for a linebacker. However, he was also one of the cheerleaders on the field, clapping and congratulating other players. He also appears to be in excellent condition.

Goethel reports two offers. "San Diego State and UCLA are two that I know of," he said. "My coach is handling a lot of my recruiting and he says a lot of schools have said they were going to offer me." Michigan fans will remember the name of Goethel's coach -- Dan Williams, now the head football coach at Vista, was defensive coordinator for the Panthers during the recruiting of former Vista, and current Michigan cornerback Leon Hall.

Goethel showed excellent cover skills during the one-on-one competition.
As a matter of fact, Geothel said his head coach was recently in Ann Arbor visiting Hall. "He went back for the Michigan spring game," he said. "He was visiting Leon. I played with Leon when I was a freshmen and he was a senior. We played in the championship game together." That night, Vista lost a 14-13 heartbreaker in the CIF San Diego Section Final to rival Carlsbad.

The talented Goethel is hoping to make the trek east in the near future. "Coach Williams and I are supposed to go to the Midwest to see some schools," Goethel said. "I know Michigan and Notre Dame are (schools) we'll visit, I'm not sure of the others. I'd like to camp at Michigan but I'm not sure I will. If I were to get an offer they would definitely be one of the schools I'd officially visit."

Goethel said Michigan coach Ron English was at Vista last week.
