Ole Miss Nike Combine: Mitch Mustain Has The Arm

The best arm GoBlueWolverine has seen in our spring combine tour: Springdale, Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain. Mustain still has an ugle scar from the broken arm that ended his junior season, but his arm is anything BUT ugly. GoBLueWolverine watched Mustain for several hours Sunday -- here is our Scouting Report on him, and our combine interview.

First our interview. We chatted with Springdale, Arkansas, quarterback Mitch Mustain right as the Ole Miss Nike Combine ended, before the hoards of other reporters could get to him.

On his combine performance:

"I didn't run a 40 yard dash, or do the bench press. I was measured for height and weight -- 6-2 1/2 and 190 pounds. And I ran a shuttle -- my time was 4.22 seconds."

On whether his broken arm still bothers him:

"Yeah I broke my throwing arm -- look, it was the forearm. They put a couple of pins in it," showing us the long scar nasty-looking on his right forearm. "Throwing doesn't bother me at all."

Regarding recruiting: a week ago he told Allen Wallace he had a final seven: Arkansas, Texas, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Louisville. He verified to GBW that the list still holds, and that he plans a summer decision. Hoerver, he said:

"I don't have things narrowed down to a top five yet. Or what visits I will take in the summer. We'll make those decisions in June."

When you narrow things down in June, do you think a summer visit to Michigan might be in your plans?

"Well, we haven't decided for sure, as I said. But -- yeah, we probably will."

Regarding his attraction to Michigan:

"That's easy. Great tradition, great program, great school."

Has Michigan been in your school this spring?

"Coach Loeffler was at my school a short time ago. And he told me that Coach Carr is coming in soon as well."

And Mustain's head coach told us when we talked to him, "Scot (Loeffler) just called me last night (Saturday) and we talked for a while."

GBW's Mustain Scouting report:

The short version - great arm, excellent mobility.

As noted above, Mustain isn't huge at 6-foot-2 1/2 and 190 pounds. And he's a quiet kid so he would blend in to the quarteraback group -- until it was his turn. Then wow -- he has an exceptionally 'live' arm. He has an effortless throwing motion and a ball that really moves. His accuracy was good (on a day where a gusty wind blowing across the field affected everyone's the deep throws, plus the DB's generally dominated the WR's). Add in the exceptional 4.22 second shuttle mobility, and, well, he's the second truly exceptional quarterback GBW has seen this year (the other being Florida's Tim Tebow). Whoever lands him -- probably Texas, Michigan or Arkansas -- will be getting a special talent.

Final JR (12-1, he broke the arm in the last game, his team's only loss) stats: 2160 yds pass/20 TDs/7 INTs; 330 yds rush/14 TDs; Bench: 235/Squat: 385

Academics: 2.7 GPA/26 ACT--June retest
