Class of 2006 Basketball Recruiting Primer

Will Eric Boateng visit Michigan? Find out on the web's original and most complete Michigan basketball best guess list. Check inside for detailed detailed recruiting profiles for each prospect and links to all GBW stories on the listed players.

Format Change
One significant change to the list is the addition of the "target level" and "interest" indexes to each profile. Target level refers to our OPINION on where each respective player stands on the current recruiting list based on all of the information gathered up to this point. Interest refers to the how strongly each respective player is considering the Wolverines at this point in time. Each category is rated on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high).

5 - Interest couldn't be any stronger
4 - Very strong interest. Only a matter of time before they're 5's
3 - Interested with the potential to move up with more familiarity and evaluation
2 - Limited interest
1 - Low interest

The list is ordered first by Target Level and then sub-ordered by Interest level. These ratings can change from update to update, so keep an eye on them!

This list will be updated regularly as new players are discovered and players already listed make their decisions. The link to the Primer will reside permanently on the left NAV bar under the Best Guess Recruiting Class section.

Ultra versatile wing player that can play three positions on the basketball court (1,2, and 3). Plays with edge and catches opponents by surprise with his athleticism. His perimeter shot has improved a great deal and is threat to light it up from deep in any game. We mentioned in previous primer reports that we expected him to have a breakout summer and he has done just that. Exploded up the charts with an impressive summer campaign (much like Sims). His showing at the Adidas camp may have been the performance that cemented him as a top target on the Wolverines list. Junior year recognition: Detroit News 2nd team All-State (Class A). Detroit Free Press 3rd team All-State (Class A). Selected for the 2005 NBA Players Association Top 100 camp.

Deshawn is a face-up post player with range out to the three-point line. He can take big men off of the dribble, but must work to improve his game with his back to the basket. As he displays a willingness to bang around more down low he'll become more and more dangerous. It seems as if that message has been passed along. He displayed tremendous improvement in that area this summer. His AAU performances garnered a lot praise and he is one of the hotter prospects on the circuit. That carried over to an AWESOME showing at the Nike All-American camp in Indianapolis. By the fall he had catapulted himself to the top player in the state of Michigan and one of the top 25 in the country. The Wolverines took notice and "Petey" became a HUGE priority. Averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds.while leading Pershing to the Regionals (where they lost to Romulus). Detroit News All-State Dream Team. Detroit Free Press 1st team All-State (Class A). Visited Michigan the weekend of May 14. 2005 and Michigan State the weekend of the 21st. In July 2005 he turned in a monster performance at the Rebok Big Time tournament and carried his club (the R.E.A.C.H. Legends) all the way to the round of eight. Sims broke the news of his Michigan commitment to GBW on August 12, 2005. He chose the Wolverines over Syracuse and Michigan State. Led Pershing to The PSL Finals and Regional Semifinals where they lost to Detroit Redford both times. Sims finished third for the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award with 329 points, behind David Kool (931 points) and Tom Herzog (360 points).

Four of Oak Hill Academy Coach Steve Smith's starters are headed to Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and UNC Charlotte respectively. Anthony Wright was the last front-liner to verbally commit, and Smith believes the Wolverines got a good one. "Anthony is 6-6.5, about 240-lbs, and he plays both the three and the four for us," Smith said. "We played him exclusively at the three as a sophomore because he can put it on the floor. He's a good passer and is also a very good shooter. This is his third year at Oak Hill and he has shot over 40% from three since he has been here. We play him inside too. He has the ability to score. He is a very good rebounder both offensively and defensively. Like I said, he is versatile because he can play a couple of positions." Wright had 15 mid-major offers in the fall, but decided to wait on bigger fish. That decision paid off, as both Michigan and St. John's began to recruit him heavily in the winter. Assistant coach Mike Jackson keyed Michigan's recruitment of the versatile forward, and after months of evaluating him, the Wolverines beat the Red Storm to the punch and secured his verbal. Wright is one of seven Division I players on the #1 team in the country and averages 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in 17 minutes per game. Wright took his official visit to Michigan the third weekend in March and was on hand for the Wolverines victory over Notre Dame in the NIT.

***Transfer from Duke***
Ranked a 5 star player and the #3 center in the 2005 class by TheInsidersHoops.com. He broke his foot in the first game of the year, but schools have still been hot and heavy after this England transplant. Assistant Coach Chuck Swenson visited Boateng in mid January 2004 and were again in during the first few days of the evaluation period. Eric made his way to Ann Arbor in March of 2004 on an unofficial visit and he reportedly enjoyed the trip. Eventually committed to Duke where he played limited minutes during his freshman year. Decided to transfer after his initial season in Durham and he is again considering the Wolverines. The London native is scheduled to visit Michigan Sunday, May 7th.. Also considering Notre Dame, Arizona State, and Goerge Washington.

Scott is a tremendous outside shooter that can explode for thirty point perfromances at anytime thanks to his accuracy beyond the arc. His play at the Boo Williams Invitational tourney in early April garnering all tourney selection and served notice that he'll be one of the top floor leaders in his class. Reynolds visited Ann Arbor in October of 2004 with his high school coach Gary Hall and the the Wolverines were amongst the early favorites. He eventually chose the Oklahoma Sooners in April of 2005. When Kelvin Sampson decided to take the Indiana job in April of 06 Reynolds opted to re-open his recruitment and he is again considering Michigan. Tommy Amaker has already ventured down to Virginia for a five hour chat with the young sharpshooter. He has already visited LSU, plans to visit Villanova, and could visit Illinois or even Michigan again.

At 6-9, 214 pounds, Udoh is a power forward with some small forward in his game. He can step out and hit the 12-footer, drive to the basket and score, and can also deliver in the post with his turnaround jumper. At this point in time, though, he is a more accomplished defensive player with a reputations as a good shot-blocker and rebounder. One issue that limited his play and progress for the better part of a year is a shoulder injury that he suffered prior to the start of his high school season. After dislocating it prior to the start of his junior campaign, he opted to play through the pain with the aid of a brace. He was still playing in pain at the ABCD camp, but still managed to play very hard and left everything on the court. Udoh had surgery in August to correct the problem. Udoh has been offered by Michigan visited officially on September 3rd. Next up is a trip to Pittsburgh. Udoh had indicated that his decision would likely come around the month of January, but prior to the New Year he began to mention the idea putting off college altogether and attend prep school in an effort to entice more schools to join his recruitment. Michigan remains interested.

***Transfer from Rutgers***
Gibson is a versatile big man that can step out and hit 10-12 footer. He can also can shoot it from beyond the arc. Really improved his game in his senior season. Rebounds, runs floor, solid defender. Needs to play all out all of the time. Also needs to be more physical, which may come with increased size. He is still maturing physically (should be a senior in high school right now). Helped K'len Morris lead Grand Blanc to the Regionals averaging 16.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.2 blocks, 2.6 assists. Detroit News 1st team All-State (Class A). Detroit Free Press 1st team All-State (Class A). Gibson didn't receive interest from Michigan his senior year and intially committed to Gary Waters and Rutgers. Didn't receive much playing time his frosh season and elected to transfer after Gibson was replaced as coach. Michigan and Eastern Michigan are the early favorites.
