Hockey Improves to 2-0-0 With 5-3 Victory

The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan hockey met the University of Quinnipiac on Saturday night at Yost Ice Arena in the conclusion of a two game weekend series. Michigan prevailed over the Bobcats for the second consecutive night, this time riding the hot stick of defenseman Matt Hunwick to a 5-3 victory.

After struggling on the power play last night, the Wolverines capitalized on their first special teams advantage Saturday night. Matt Hunwick jammed the puck past Quinnipiac goalie Wes Russell at 7:48, just after the Wolverines Jack Johnson sent a shot in from the point that trickled off the Bobcat goalies pads to the left of the net minder.

It was a short lived lead for the Wolverines, however, as Quinnipiac tied the game at one apiece 45 seconds later. At 8:33, the Bobcats Brian Leitch put Quinnipiac on the board by jamming a centering pass past Michigan goalie Billy Sauer from just in front of the crease.

The two teams alternated scoring opportunities to close the period, but neither side was able to break the deadlock as the teams skated into the intermission.

In the second period, the Wolverines took control of the game. Matt Hunwick added his second goal of the night six minutes into the second period of play. With the puck at the point, Hunwick sent the shot at the Bobcat net that found its way past Russell through the goaltenders legs.

Andrew Ebbett added his first goal of the season 52 seconds later by slamming home a centering pass from Chad Kolarik behind the Bobcat net.

At 8:48 of the period, Jack Johnson scored his first collegiate goal. Johnson's shot from the point squirted past the screen Quinnipiac goalie and into the bottom corner of the net to extend the Wolverines lead to 4-1.

Quinnipiac trimmed the lead back to two goals with under four minutes to play in the period. After a centering pass from the right circle, Matt Hunwick attempted to play the puck in midair tipping the puck past Sauer and into the Wolverines net.

Michigan out shot Quinnipiac 29-17 and led 4-2 as the teams ended the second period.

Matt Hunwick added his third goal of the night on a 5-on-3 advantage for the Wolverines, sending a shot from inside the slot past Russell to push the Wolverines advantage back up to three goals.

Quinnipiac added a final goal with 1:36 remaining, but the Wolverines held on for the 5-3 victory. Michigan next takes the ice at Yost Ice Arena on Friday against Boston College in a match up of top 10 teams.
