Nearly 800 miles separates Ann Arbor from Carlos Brown's hometown of Franklin, Georgia, but that has not prevented the Wolverines from making an impression on the Peach State star. Michigan caught his attention at a very early age, and he followed those winged helmets ever since. "Michigan…that's the Big House man!" exclaimed Brown. "That's just one of those schools you see on TV every week. I've always had an interest in Michigan, but a lot more now, especially since ninth grade."
As a standout at a number of positions throughout his high school career, Brown had been garnering attention from a number of prominent programs by his junior year, but he hadn't really been hearing from the Maize and Blue. That all changed when he initiated contact. "I got in touch with Michigan early last year," Brown recalled. "Coach Scot Loeffler came down to my school and they offered me a scholarship last school year."
Brown now holds close to 30 offers, and though he played primarily quarterback during his senior season, every school on his list has promised to give him the opportunity to play his position of choice. "I want to play running back in college," he said. "I actually I played quarterback all this season and I played safety on defense. I had about 130 carries for close to 1600 yards, and I had over 70 tackles with about five picks."
Scout.com ranks Brown as the top running back in the state of Georgia, citing his "blend of size and speed…vision…and the shake to make a guy miss in the open field" as reasons for that distinction. When Brown was asked to describe himself as a player, he talked mostly about his unselfishness. "You can describe me by saying I'm a team player," said Brown. "Whatever I've got to do to get a win, I'm going to do it. I'm 6-0.5 and about 205 pounds. I don't know what I run in the forty. I just know I'm pretty fast."
With the University of Georgia only a stone's throw away from Brown, they have seemingly had an advantage in his recruiting race. He has already been to Athens a number of times unofficially, with the most recent visit coming this past weekend. According to Brown, though, all the schools on his list are equal at this point in time. "I didn't grow up liking any particular school," he said. "I don't have a favorite. I'm still looking at all the schools on my list. I've been FSU, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, and Tennessee. All of those were unofficially except for Florida State. I go to Michigan this weekend and I take my official to Georgia December 9th. I've got two more (visits), but I haven't made a final decision on where I'm going to go."
When it finally comes time for Brown to make his college choice, the visits will play a huge role in determining where he'll end up. One thing he say won't is distance. "The atmosphere of the place is important," Brown said. "Distance from home is not a big factor. I ain't a momma's boy (laughing). I'm pretty grown, so I'm straight."
As for his decision timetable, look for Brown to make a choice fairly soon. "I want to go to college in January, so I'll decide sometime before it's too late," he said.
