Next week, St. Mary’s and 6-foot junior point guard Kalin Lucas open their season. The No. 23 prospect in the Class of 2007 says a lot has happened – due to hard work – since the summer and he’s ready to be an even better player.
“I’d have to say going to the basket, my penetration and shooting (improved),” Lucas said. “I’ve been waking up in the morning and going to the gym before school. I shoot jump shots before school starts; I do that everyday.”
Lucas isn’t going to worry about recruiting during the high school season. It’s time to chase a state title and that’s what’s encompassing him this winter. However, he did say that Michigan and Michigan State have offered him and Wake Forest and Kentucky are monitoring him.
As it stands now, this one is shaping up to be an in-state tug-of-war especially since the Deacs and Wildcats haven’t formally offered. “I don’t talk to them much but they text me and tell me how they want me to come down and visit them. They want me to make sure I watch them,” Lucas said of Wake and UK.
Lucas was asked to compare the Wolverines and Spartans.
“Michigan and Michigan State, well, first off I think the players are about the same and the coaches are the same but Coach Izzo has a lot of wins and he made it to the Final Four last year so I think Michigan State has a little more than Michigan (in that regard).
“When I see Michigan I see a good program and a good coaching staff. With Michigan State I think the same. When I go down to Michigan State I’m cool with the players and they welcome me. The coaching staff at Michigan State is winners and so is Michigan.”
For the record, Lucas grew up a fan of the Spartans.
“I think I have a good chance of staying in the state but if it’s a good situation out of state id’ take that too.”
