Huge offensive tackle Perry Dorrestein (6-7, 280, 5.30, Scout Combine stats) Plainfield Central, Illinois, Scout.com's #100 Midwest prospect, was an official visitor to U-M this weekend. GoBlueWolverine just got off the phone with him (early Sunday evening).
How did the visit go?
"Well ... I went ahead and committed today to Michigan!"
Why did you pick Michigan?
"I liked everything about it, it is just a perfect fit for me."
"Michigan has everything I want in a school and in a football program."
"I was going to wait, but I decided before I left to go ahead and verbally commit."
Dorrestein had an official visit set for Northwestern next weekend, but said, "I've cancelled that. It's Michigan for me."
Dorrestein said he hung around at the visit with fellow U-M commitment Justin Boren and John Ferrara, and with U-M O-Line freshmen David Moosman, Cory Zirbel, Mark Ortmann and Tim McAvoy.
Dorrestein had only taken one other official visit, to Nebraska, but after this weekend he'd seen enough -- he is a Wolverine.
Dorrestein was a 2005 Michigan camper and looked almost thin at 280 pounds on his 6-7 frame. Perhaps because of that (in a similar situation to Mark Ortmann last year), he didn't receive a U-M Camp offer, but the U-M staff kept a close eye on him. After watching film of his September games, an offer was quickly extended, he made an official visit for the thrilling Penn State game. Meanwhile, Dorrestein was collecting Big Ten scholarship offers pretty quickly, but U-M went to work in ernest to land the huge OT.
He is also a top student, with a 4.0+ GPA and a 24 SAT (junior score).
