Orchard Lake St. Mary's safety Aaron Gant has seen the intensity of his recruitment reach a fever pitch lately. Many of the Midwest's top programs have made 6-0.5, 200-pound athlete a priority, and that is certainly the case when speaking of the University of Michigan.
Flanked by his cousin Dionte Allen, Gant traveled to Ann Arbor this weekend
to take in Michigan-UCLA basketball game. The unofficial visit marked his first
trip to campus since the Wolverines offered him a scholarship. According to
Gant, it was extremely evident from the amount of attention he was being shown
that the Maize and Blue definitely wants him.
"It went good," Gant said of the visit. "I was only up for the day with my cousin Dionte, but it was still fun. I got a chance to speak with just about all of the coaches. I spent time talking to Coach English since he would be my coach if I went there. He talked about how much he wanted me to come there. He didn't really try to get me to commit though. He made a joke about it, but I don't think he was serious."
When English wasn't telling the Gant what a good fit Michigan would be for him, a few of the Wolverine defensive backs were. St. Mary's alums Morgan Trent and Grant Mason offered their perspectives on playing for the third year Michigan assistant, and the youngster came away impressed. "Morgan was telling me what a good coach Coach English is," Gant recalled. "He talked about what it would be like to play for him and how it would help me. Grant said pretty much the same thing. They said he is a great coach."
Now that Wolverines have shown Gant some of what they have to offer, a few other programs are scheduled to receive the same opportunity. However, Gant mentioned that while speaking with Michigan headman Lloyd Carr, it was determined that he would make a return trip to Ann Arbor after his other visits have concluded.
"Coach Carr mainly talked about how interested they were in me and that I had an offer," Gant said. "He also talked about me coming back in January for an official visit. I'm taking a visit to Washington on January 6th and Ohio State on January 13th. That's going to be it. I don't know what weekend I'll visit Michigan, but I'm going to call back [Monday] to set that up."
Gant indicated that at this point his decision still appears to be about a month away. That said, it is now clear that one team stands out in the race for his services. "Well, I like Michigan mainly because I know everybody up there," Gant said regarding who his leader is. "I know Morgan, Grant, and Chris. Then, me and my cousin were just talking about playing together earlier. On top of that you know I'm cool with Brandon Graham. We've talked about it too. Alex Legion is my boy. We were talking at the game and you know he is going there. Right now I've got a lot of love for Michigan."
GoBlueWolverine will have more from Gant in the coming weeks.
