CaliFla Game Mudfest; Sunny Army Week Begins

The CaliFlorida game, played Saturday in Fullerton, California, was played in a mud-bowl due to heavy rains in on the West Coast -- but the two top Michigan recruits in the game held their own. And for the BIG game, the U.S. Army All American Bowl game, players are arriving in San Antonio, Texas today.

Southern California has had several inches of rain in the past 48 hours, and the All Star teams from Florida and California had to slog through a water-and-mud field to play the CaliFlorida Bowl game Saturday afternoon. The Florida team, more used to the rain, dominated the turnover-plagued contest (10 in all), winning 20-0. The California team was doomed by seven turnovers as the players from both teams slipped and slid around the field for the whole game. However, the two Michigan recruits in the contest, one on each team, more than held their own.

Floridian offensive tackle Daron Rose was the biggest player in the game, and he started and played most of the first three quarters as the Florida team scored their 20 points. Rose showed excellent quickness at his strongside tackle spot. As far as recruiting goes, Rose has stated recently that Florida State and Michigan are his leaders, but he has three official visits coming up in January: to South Carolina, Florida, and FSU (his last visit).

California safety Jonas Mouton was the biggest defensive back on the field, and was bigger than the California linebackers as well. Mouton started and was on the field for the majority of the snaps and, with the inclement conditions making passing almost impossible, he played most of the game close to the line of scrimmage in more of a hybrid-linebacker spot. Mouton showed excellent speed, quickness and hitting ability -- the whole package.

A couple former U-M recruits were in the game as well: QB Tim Tebow started for the Florida team but completed no passes (he attempted approx. 10) and threw an interception. RB C.J. Spiller, a speed running back for the Florida team, was hampered by the slippery conditions as well.

While the Florida team returns home today, Tebow and Mouton, as well as several of their teammates, will be jetting to warm, sunny San Antonio as the Army Bowl All Americans arrive in Texas today. The East and West squads will practice Tuesday through Friday for the game on Saturday (NBC TV). Michigan recruits in the game include:

-- DB Jonas Mouton (who may announce his decision at the game),
-- DB Jai Eugene (who will announce his decision at the game),
-- OT Sam Young (taking a January visit to U-M),
-- OL Steve Schilling (visited U-M in Dec., taking at least one Jan. visit),
-- and three Wolverine commitments:
-- LB Brandon Graham,
-- OG/OC Justin Boren and
-- S Steve Brown.

GoBlueWolverine will be there in force as well of course -- and at the U.S. Army Junior Combine next weekend too, which will include several future '06-'07 Michigan recruits.
