West offensive right guard, and U-M recruit, Steve Schilling had a better day today in one-on-ones and pass defense ... he's learning fast. He is the starter at RG of course. His strength is quickness, aggressiveness, and smarts. He has to get bigger, heavier, stronger.
West Defense is just GOOD, and Jonas Mouton and Jai Eugene are important parts of it. Mouton will have to cover Percy Harvin on some plays Sat. ... will be be able to ... tall task for anyone. He IS a safety though, not a linebacker. Eugene -- just a talented cover CB, pure and simple -- the West's best cover corner.
Speaking of Eugene, LSU Asst. Coach Doug Mallory (former U-M DB) is here today scouting him. Doug still looks like he's ready to get out there and play himself. There are also four Notre Dame coaches here, FOUR, watching every move of QB Mitch Mustain (Ark. decommit). Also coaches are here watching the West practice from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oregon State ... with coaches' convention here tomorrow and part of the Army Week festivities now, they coaches are allowed to scout practices.
Of the 3 West QB's, all looked sharp today, with Mustain perhaps the LEAST sharp ... still, he will start Sat. for the West we believe.
Overall scouting report on the West. They have a STRONG defense, at all position groups ... but will the offense be able to score? Their RB's are of the small-fast variety (former U-M recruit Demarco Murray is the 'biggest' at 6-0, 180 ...). Their QB's are excellent but it looks like David Ausberry is their one pass catching weapon. They may throw to the TE's as well.
