Focus '07: Mike Garrity (U-M Camper, Visitor)

]It wasn't that long ago when Batavia, Ill., was home to one of the top offensive line prospects in the Midwest, James Ryan. Ryan is now at Illinois and the Bulldogs have another prospect that Mike Gaspari feels is even better than Ryan. Mike Garrity, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound, defensive lineman, already has three scholarship offers.

Mike Garrity Profile

"I have scholarship offers from Illinois, Iowa State and Northern Illinois." Mike Garrity said.

"My favorites are Michigan, Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State. I've been to Notre Dame for a junior day. I've been to Michigan for their camp last summer.

"I was invited to Michigan's junior day on January 28th but I'm going to Illinois instead. Purdue came to school last week and Coach (Mark) Hagen told my coach that I'll be getting an invitation to their junior day. I plan on hitting a lot of one-day camps this summer."

Coach Gaspari feels that Garrity could play several positions at the next level.

"Mike is more athletic than James Ryan (Illinois) was when James was a senior in high school." Coach Gaspari said.

"Mike Garrity is a defensive end for us but he's athletic enough to play tight end. He has a great frame that could hold 20-30 more pounds. I still feel he's got some growing left to do. Mike runs real well and he doesn't have any body fat. He could play anywhere on the offensive or defensive line in college.

"Most of the schools that have come in and have seen Mike have been very impressed. They told me that they are going to offer him at the position that he wants to play and wherever he ends up, he ends up. I know Mike wants to play on the defensive line in college. That's where his hearts at right now."

Did Garrity have a childhood favorite growing up? Does he have a position preference at the next level? "I was more of a soccer kid growing up," Garrity explained. "I really didn't follow football all that much. As far as what position I play in college. I want to play defensive end but I'd be fine with playing on the offensive line. I'll play wherever the coaches feel that I fit in the best."

Garrity has a sister on a track scholarship at Eastern Illinois. He's considering in majoring in Education. Mike carries a 3.4 GPA in the classroom and scored a 27 on his ACT.

(GBW Note: besides being a 2005 U-M Camper, Garrity attended the Minnesota and Ohio games last fall.)
